Tap and Screw Jig Tutorial #3: Finishing the Guide Block

857 days ago by CartersWhittling | 19 comments »

Hello. In Part Three of the Tap and Screw Jig Tutorial series I finish the work on the guide block for the Tap. I start by laying out and cutting the metal plate which is inserted into the guide block to guide the dowel through the Tap. After work on the metal plate is done I attach two wooden blocks to create the clearance for the blade as it exists the Tap. The second video is designed to help those who may be confused about laying out the thread pattern on the paper that wraps around...

I’ve noticed some Blogs and questions about sharpening chisels and I thought I give you my experiences and what I’ve designed. I’m getting ready to teach a sharpening workshop for the Mason-Dixon Woodworkers club and I was working on my setup and techniques. I own the Tormek Sharpening System , the Makita Sharpening System . I’ve used The Scary Sharp System and I build a modified Scary Sharp setup using cast iron plates and silicon carbide granules on the coarser grits and diamond paste...

The latest issue of Wood Magazine (Issue 192-Sept 2009) is just hitting the mailboxes and will soon be at the bookstores and magazine racks. On the cover is Norm Abram, but on page three, listed in the index is a mention for my joint testing video! They also printed an image captured from the video. I am honored and excited about being chosen for a mention in Wood Magazine. I plan on doing more videos in the future, but they take a lot of work and I have my own business to run so ple...

Slice and Dice

1878 days ago by closetguy | 10 comments »

A while back someone asked a forum question about what everyone does with their scrap wood and cutoffs. The overwhelming response was for inlay pieces, or firewood. I also do the same thing, but last fall I gathered up some scrap and made up bookmarks for gifts at Christmas. While doing this I sort of got carried away with it. Making bookmarks are like making cutting boards. It’s not difficult and its fun experimenting with different designs and wood types. With glued up blocks, it’s ...

Shop Skills #2: Card Scrapers the Video!

2039 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 54 comments »

It’s Finally Here! I have completed my first feature woodworking video. This video shows how I sharpen my card scrapers. It is a simple process and I kept the instruction simple with some close-up video action. I hope this post goes smooth, it has taken me all day to figure out how to finish up the video and 3 attempts to get it online. So this is a pretty big moment. I can work on polished video later but I have to start somewhere. I hope that this video on sharpening ca...
