Your best friend in the shop #1: What is the one thing you use all the time and couldn't live without?

I heard a carpenter say one time that caulk was a painter’s best friend. I’m not sure a painter couldn’t have said the same thing about this particular carpenter (The painter was covering up all his mistakes). So what would you consider your best friend in the shop.

As most of you know, I’m a weekend lumberjock and I’d have to say my Bessey UniKlamps have proven to be a good friend thus far. Don’t know yet about best friend status. That would still go to my cordless drill as I use it for everything else around the house. I feel like I just need to carry it with me everywhere.

But back to the shop specifically….what is your best friend?

Building first dedicated shop...what now?

Well so far almost all of the grand plans I had for my shop have been scrapped. Unlike leftover wood, those plans ended up in the trash. First was the time frame. About a month and a half ago I told my wife it would be a weekend deal…..two at the most. If you saw it now you might wonder if I was really working on it or just sitting down there for some peace and quiet. With 5 young children, 4 of them girls and 2 of those being 2 yo twins, a table saw is quiet. Three main things have slowed me down: 1. My shop is in a basement directly below my older girls bedroom. Therefore no power tools after hours unless I move them. 2. Too much stuff. I’ve got so many things to keep organized I think I’ve defeated the purpose. 3. Measuring how big things are in my head doesn’t work. I tore out some old shelves thinking I would have plenty of room for a table saw then a router table….. Kids calling more later
