No and N/A.
But… I am really surprised that it never happened. I did a lot of really stupid things around power tools when I was growing up and didn’t know any better. Nobody taught me when I was young. I did stuff like rip 2×4s without a fence. But I’m talkin’ over ten years ago when I was a dumb kid. (I’m still a kid but hopefully just not quite as dumb.)

Yes kickback
Yes to the hurt, but only a slight punch in the gut, where I am admirably padded against injury. The Carhartt’s must have taken the brunt of the force. The offcut on the outside of the blade is what came back.

yes I have had a kickback. I dont know where were at for totals. I was hurt. My feelings, pride and solar plexis all bruised. I was cutting a hunk of oak with the fence when I clearly should have been using the miter gauge. It was on one of those 5 horse powermatic beasts at a local cabinet shop. I kid you not, one second i was cutting and another second I was on my back on the floor a few feet from the saw. It knocked the wind out of me and left a three-quarter by six inch bruise across my midsection….hurt like heck!! Never again will I make the same mistake.

Was barely hurt once because of it. The piece hit my finger on it’s trip across the room. Was only hurt akin to stubbing a toe.

Yes, several kickbacks, although until something new comes up, I think I’ve figured out what will cause one.
Yes, to hurt, but not every time. Worse was a blow to the lower abdomen, that I truly feel led to a hernia. Had some damage done by “flying wood” to a shop door.

Karson- it’d be crazy for everyone to try and keep track of the total numbers as people might post at the same time, and you’ll have multithreading counting going on… and PS- how are you recovering from that kickback?
maybe there should be a way to post a “poll” forum thread for people to vote and have LJ script keep track of numbers… (Martin are you getting this ? or are you still busy with trolly polly?)

Kick back = yes
Hurt by table saw kick back = no
Hurt by router table and stupidity = YES
A little twist to the thread but while building the rocking chair in my projects, when I was routing the round mortises the router bit kicked the wood one way and my middle finger ended up in the bit. Nicked off the corner of my finger almost to the bone under the nail. It could have been much worse.

I think so
I wasn’t hurt but i broke a tooth on the table saw blade and bent my metal insert.
I was cutting a bevel and the drop piece fell on the blade. The worse part is i knew it was wrong but wanted to see what would happen. Not my best idea. The piece dropped on the blade and then wedged in between the insert and blade. Some how the blade lost a tooth and the metal plate was bent. It was kind of scary. I have retired from the lets see what is going to happen business.
The Freud blade some how still works good. Not as good but I blew it up pretty well. I also learned that trying new things with a new blade is not the best way to break it in.

table saw-yes
Router table w/o fence (first time I was using it)-yes
Hurt-just my pride
Tonight I was out in the garage and cutting some second life flooring underlayment that I used previously as shelving. I did not relize that I had apparently tacked it down with 18g brads until my table saw blade hit one, threw it up and it was stuck in my shoulder. Dang that smarted, still sore. And I have a nice little welt with a hole in it.

Table saw- no
Planer- Yes
Jointer-Yes
Hurt- 0
Within the first couple weeks of getting my jointer and planer I had a kickback from each, on the jointer it was from tring to joint a peice of wood that was way too small luckly I was smart enough to make sure my had was pushing toward the fence and not the blades. The planer was a simular incident, planing a glued up piece that was on the verge of being to short and got caught funny in the blades and sent a peice fling back out at the speed of light, again even I was luckly standing out of the danger zone.

yes and no. I was ripping with a radial arm saw and sent a piece of oak through the drywall. Wouldn’t have happened if I had properly adjusted the antii kickback pawls. Had the same thing happen on my table saw. I had removed the anti kickback pawls and spreader because they were thicker than the thin kerf blade I was using. Fortunately I was standing off to the side and no one was behind me. Scared me enough to stop using thin kerf blades on my cabinet maker saw.

I’m a newbie, but because I’m starting as an older person, I am taking a lot of care. So no kickback from the table saw and no injuries. I intend to remain very careful, and to continue to approach the table saw with great respect. I have had kickback on the router table (workpiece went flying, but luckily didn’t hit me) so now I’m approaching the router table with as much or more respect.

hurt – minor
Ripping bamboo flooring on a contractor site table saw, minor cut on my hand. Not sure how it happened, it was so dang fast. I did get to witness a coworker take a table saw fired projectile to the gut once, I remember him explaining how painful it was, and then I got to see the enormous bruise/wound post impact. Yikes!

Yes & unfotunately Yes. twice Karson. Last one was a narrow offcut that flew back & hit the family Jewelery @#$#%$%^%^&^^$%$$. The first one was a piece twisting on a small table saw with no guard. It pushed my hand into the saw (a 1/4 inch wide mother). Split one finger down the middle to the bone & gouged a great chunk out of the another one. Had to have a skin graft off my ear to fill the hole. There is a plus though, it’s not very hard now to keep my ear to the ground. LOL

Hurt – Not seriously, just a good kick in the gut (which I’ve been told I need from time to time)
Oh Eric, if you haven’t had kickback with your saw then you’re not trying hard enough. I remember as a younger man I was sawing through a board and the hand I was using to hold it in place slipped. And, being in a ‘rhythm’ the board with the saw in it popped up and smacked me on the forehead. Yes, there’s even danger in hand tools.

Kick backs- at least 5 on TS, 1 on shaper,
Hurt twice
I’m counting 48 people who have experienced a kickback. 14 injuries (not counting multiples)
29.16% of kickbacks result in injury to Lumberjocks.
Statistically, you are more likely to remain uninjured in a 30mph (50 km/h) car accident, not wearing a seat belt then you are to remain uninjured in a kick back. Hmmmmm
It’s early, and I have a 5 week old baby at home, so I could be off.

Kickback, Yes x3
Hurt, only once.
The first stuck a piece of wood in the wall off a tablesaw.
The second was dumbness on my part. I reached around the back of the tablesaw and grabbed the 15 inch piece that I was ripping at 45 degrees with my hand. I pinched the blade and it pulled my hand right into the blade. Cut the end of my right middle finger pretty bad, but didn’t lose any length or feeling.
The third was just recently. I was ripping a small piece of plywood without a fence, trying to do it in a hurry. It bound and hit me in the gut. No injuries…. luckily.

Yes, I have had two of them happen to me. Luckily I was not on the receiving end of the projectile that slammed into a cement block wall. I was still able to use the part I was cutting out both times but it did show the blade marks and bruises after hitting that wall. What I could not believe is how fast that 1/2 inch plywood flew. Could have easily broke some ribs or even worst. Since I am not a carpenter and wasn’t sure why this happened I was even more careful. Oh well, I will stick to my high voltage stuff where I feel more comfortable. :)

TS kickback twice. One seven inch sliver threaded my hand and bled like crazy – no stitches just a reminder how stupid I can be – now use a jig for slicing edging. Second time a punch in the gut – deep bruise healed slowly to remind me again of my stupidity, lest I forget. The upside is these little reminders tend to keep us humble. BTW I have followed hobby shop accidents through my 30 year affiliation wth clubs and suggest that most who suffer shop injuries are experienced and know better.

Yes I’ve had a couple of minor kick backs.
No, I haven’t gotten hurt. I agree with Lee about the importance of a splitter. I’ll be reattaching mine before I use it again.
I would add that it’s probably even MORE important for the lower end table saws, like my table top DELTA. Since in many cases the blade isn’t perfectly square to the throat.
-- When my wife ask's what I have to show for my wood working hobby, I just show her the splinters.

I appreciate all of the true comments.
129 reads 32 comments. so not everyone wishes to participate in the poll. But each of us comming back to view the responses also run up the read count. So it’s not bad.

Kick back= yes = 1
Hurt = yes= 1
There were a couple of mistakes. First one was I had taken a dado set out of the saw and put that plate back over the thin kerf blade. What was I thinking. The part that I was cutting shot out of the saw and hit me below the belt the other piece was lodged in the ceiling. When I return to school I will get a picture of that baby.

Kickback – Yes
Hurt – No, I sidestepped it and it was heavy enough it didn’t go off the table
Also had an RAS climb a board at me when I was cutting too quickly, but as one should always do, I was fully out of the path of the cut.

no injury.
I would think if you have ever used a router in a table or a table saw this could happen at any time.

Yes, no.
Thin piece, and I was standing too the side (where Mr Tolpin says I should. The wood sprang.
That would be twice that I used the saw without the blade guard – the first time, and then of course the last time.
In my defense, it took me awhile to realize that I could use a piece of oak lower than the work piece as an auxiliary sliding fence, enabling me to get the guard and pawls in place.

Yes to kickback. No to injury.
Luckily I seem to cause more harm to myself with handtools them the big power tools. And usually then its just skinned knuckles or a small little cut.
Stay safe everyone!

Table saw – yes x 2
routertable – yes
belt sander – yes
only a minor injury on the table saw – nicely cracked rib on the first one.
Second was while I was cutting a dado, I too almost soiled myself. I got about half way through the cut and knew something bad was about to happen. Before I could lift my knee and hit the cut off switch, the board too a twist and lauched itself across the shop and left a nice dent in the metal door. my hand came to rest about 1” from the blade.
Not sure if this is a kick back or not. On the router table, I had a piece of maple explode on me…thank God I was wearing my eye protection. It trashed a nice pair of safety glasses. I’ll count it as 1/2
I got a nice gut punch when the piece i was working on worked its way over the stop on the bench and came back at me. Hit me right in the belly button. (not a small target as you would suppose.)

RAS set up to rip – 2 times
Knocked on my ass and purple arms and stomach for a week. Hurt like h*
TS x1 put a hole in the blinds on the door.
I’ve learned to stay from behind the wood. And mostly use a push stick on the inside piece.

Kickback 1
injury no
I was really new and stupidly cutting a bevel off a top with the blade tilted into the fence. The triangle was trapped under the blade, came flying out at the speed of light after it was fully detached, through the back of the cabinet i was building and over the house next door. Landed in the back yard. I was standing to the side. I used the hole in the cabinet for “Cable Management”

Yes and yes.
I had taped (with blue painters tape) ,two plastic push stick together. The sticks were 1/8” thick, 1 1/2” wide and 10” long. These came with the bow feather board. I taped two together since they were so thin to begin with. The tape was wrapped around several times in a spiral fashion. I had made a successful cut and then tried to push the “cut off” to the side. THAT was the mistake. The push stick hit the blade and I felt the plastic dig into my palm. The cut was only 1/4” deep. I looked behind me and the two pieces had separated and both were about 15 feet behind me in the driveway. One went out each garage door!

OK, I read… now I gotta reply…
Kickback – Yes
Hurt – No… although the 3/4×3/4×10” piece of MDF did a number on my pegboard, bounced off and hit my tool chest with enough force to cut a 1/4” gouge into it.
Having read enough about kickbacks, I’m wary enough of my table saw to ALWAYS stand out of the path of any possible projectiles!
