I received a message today from Oscomer’s wife (Name not shown). She had someone come to her door representing themselves as a representative of LumberJocks. He stated that he was there to help her. He made some comment about his shop. He wanted to come into the house and she wouldn’t let him in.
He physically threw her to the ground and scratched her when she yelled. A neighbor heard the scream and came to her assistance. The person disappeared.
When the police came he told her that we had provided in some of our blogs about Oscomer’s last name, the name of his wife and their son.
Her request was that we remove and/or blank out the family and her name and her son’s name and also the city and state.
I directed her to edit his profile and remove the town and state. I’m editing any blogs that I’ve created to edit out the names to protect her. if there are any comments, we cannot edit them.
I will contact Martin to see if any comments with their names can be edited or removed.
If you have posted any blogs, you can edit them.
Again she was really scared and asked for our assistance.
Thanks all and lets keep this place safe for all.
Karson

That’s terrible. Good that her neighbor was there and was willing to get involved. I hope she was able to give the police a good description of the jerk and they can catch him. I know about 2000 LJs that will have something to say to him.
I’m glad she’s OK.

OMG, that’s one reason my wife will never open the door for anyone. Anyone that wants to come see her, better call first.
I wouldn’t have anything to say to him but fist does.

Thank God she is okay but there are a lot of low lifes out there and perhaps we all should be more careful with things we give out. I hope something can be done to get the guy.

I am stunned at the thought of someone so low as to try and take advantage of and hurt a woman who lost her husband less than a month ago.
If the person who did this is reading this post…May God have mercy on you, I hope the authorties won’t.

Hopefully it was just someone trolling the site. I’d hate to think it was an actual member of the site that assaulted his wife.

There is a special corner in hell for s**theads like this. I pray that he is not one of our number.
It’s commonly known that there is a class of bottom feeders that check the local obituaries, and attempt to burglarize homes during funeral services. We had someone house-sit during my Father’s funeral, and sure enough there was someone around to case the joint during the service. Vile.

Despite the cameraderie and good will that prevails on LJ’s, this foul incident just reinforces the the need for care with what we include in posts here and especially on other sites. There is a tiny percentage of “lurkers” out there that don’t have good intentions. Thank God she was not seriously hurt.

Scumbag is too nice a word for someone like that. It is a blessing and a curse that we are spread around the world. We get to share experiences from every part of the globe, but when something like this happens we cannot be there to protect one of our own. There is not enough contempt to heap on someone who would do such a thing. And I will continue to keep Mark’s wife in mind.

This just makes everyone sick! The vultures that show up to take advantage of one’s passing never ceases to amaze me. Seems they know just when to lite on their innocent pray. I hope they catch this one and after the authorities finish sentencing him , they make him a public example. Sometimes it’s a shame that stocks went out of stile. Especially this case. It would take a woodworker to build it. (I’d volunteer my services!!)
God bless and continue to look after she and her son.

But as we all love to share our projects with others and enjoy learning new tricks of our craft, Lets remember one thing…..”One bad Apple could spoil a web site” and drive people away. How sad, disgusting, and pitiful. Amazing the depths that criminals will sink to.
This is a time to consider all of our online safety, and that of our family – as evidenced by this.
I have a number of friends that are online and have posted enough information to track them down and even shown them computer generated maps to their home. The little information it takes is scary, and there are people much better at computers than I.
Martin, your attempts at protecting us are admireable – but safety is all our responsibiity. Another statement on the potential threat to our safety that we basically bring upon ourselves through the wonders of technology we bring straight into our homes.
Gene I’ll help with the stocks and imagine most of us would work to build one for our community. IF only…

I am sadden by what happen to the family and also the incident in which LJs’ name was misused in an attempt to gain someones trust.
I guess this tragic incident reminds me that there are a few out there who troll the web looking for opportunities to take advantage of others. Even though the vast majority of LJ and non-members who read LJ discussions are the kind of people we would like to have as neighbors, the internet gives universal access to anyone who had access to the net.
I guess we need to be careful not to be too specific about ourselves or others and to use the LJ messaging feature when we want to make our communications more secure. What a shame.

Hopefully she was able to give the police a very good description of the assailant and that he is ultimately caught. One can only hope. It is sad to say, but we, everyone in society, must be aware of our surroundings and always be on alert even in one’s home.

I sit here dumbfounded. I think about the number of pages I surf, the number my family surfs, and am sickened to think that I (or they) may have endangered their safety. I can’t even begin to express my emotions over this.

Thanks everyone for you posts. I don’t believe that the person was a lumberjock. It might have started with a search on death etc. and then got narrowed down to the LJ site. And he used that to try and get his foot, literally, in the door.
It didn’t work. I hope that person get a new job soon because many concerned people are looking out for the old one.

Paul in Texas –
Got to say I appreciated your addendum. Like most of us, I imagine, I certainly thought of and sent prayers to the widow/victim. Sadly on my part – I neglected to say a prayer for the perpetrator. Something in this day and age of routine atroscities we all have ample opportunity to do. “Love the sinner, hate the sin” rings a bell somewhere in this old scattered brain. Thanks for the reminder, unintentional as it may (or may not) have been.
