I'm a furniture finisher by trade - been doing it 30 years now - but that's just to pay the bills. If I were independently wealthy I'd spend my days puttering in my garden during the cool(er) mornings and the rest of the day would be spent in our shop working on any number of things. I love to woodburn, inlay, carve and turn but I also look forward to the big builds like a new kitchen island or a built-in for the closet.
We've had plenty of opportunities for that over the past 3 years as we rebuilt after a house fire and did all the inside work ourselves including that island and closet unit, laundry room cabinets, stair railings, doors, and cubby-storage to name a few of the many projects in the rebuild.
My favorite wood for color and grain - walnut.
My favorite wood for carving and inlay - padauk.
My favorite wood for burnings - clear maple.
We're not professionals at building but we enjoy the journey from glimmer of an idea, talking it to death, getting it on paper, refining the plan, gathering the materials, making sawdust and setting it in place.
