fun romp goes from wood science to wood craft

fun romp goes from wood science to wood craft

A Splintered History of Wood: Belt Sander Races, Blind Woodworkers, and Baseball Bats by Spike Carlsen This is an easy, entertaining read, with a nice mix of humor, facts, and real-world knowledge. The book gets you started with a quick schooling in wood biology, then launches into a historical tour of wood, woodworking, and wood workers. He covers the silly and the serious from the perspective of both an interviewer and a carpenter. This isn’t an encyclopedia, it won’t repl...

first rate wall-mounted pencil sharpener

first rate wall-mounted pencil sharpener

1563 days ago by KDL | 14 comments »

Yeah, I know, it’s a pencil sharpener. But it’s a really good one like I remember from elementary school. I don’t have much luck with little plastic hand-held pencil sharpeners, and the Boston brand desktop sharpener in my office doesn’t give me a good, sharp point. So I bought a new sharpener for my shop. I bought it at an office supply store, I think it was Office Depot. I had a choice of a couple generic and in-store brand sharpeners, plus this X-ACTO. The...

mail order hardwood lumber

mail order hardwood lumber

This is a wood source review. I was impressed enough with the vendor to want to post. They are knowledgeable and personable. I’m building cabinets and wanted quartersawn/rift cherry for the door rails and stiles. My local supplier doesn’t separate cherry into rift and quartered, so I went to the Internet and found http://www.dunham-hardwoods.com. Marty, the gentleman I dealt with, understood what I wanted, was able to find the material, hit-or-miss plane it, cut it to a shi...

DeWalt countersink set--almost really good

DeWalt countersink set--almost really good

The quick-change driver is easy to use and does it’s job well. The countersinks cut a fine divet—the cutters are small, which gives a clean cut, but they do clob easily, so take a moment to brush them off between holes. The only weak point is the bits. They are brittle and have very little depth-of-hole adjustment. I broke them quickly, but found better replacement bits at a big box store. For the price, it’s a decent set, but having bought them, I would now spend the ...

folding table

folding table

I was inspired to post this review after seeing Groovemadman’s very slick project post of a knock down sawhorse/bench ( http://lumberjocks.com/projects/5298 ). This table is just a Lifetime brand 2’x4’ folding plastic table that I bought at Sam’s. It is very portable, easy to store, reasonably rugged, and just a little wobbly along the 4’ side. And, of course, useful for everything a table is useful for. But here’s the real trick for me. This table i...

solid joiner for the price

solid joiner for the price

2265 days ago by KDL | 12 comments »

I bought this joiner two years ago after talking to a few woodworkers/salesmen I trust. I have used it on two large cabinets, a small table, and a small sideboard. On the whole, I think it’s a good machine for a very fair price. There are higher-end joiners that are, I’m sure, really slick. But for the money, this is a good tool, and when I bought it, it was definitely the best in its class. It comes with: The joiner, dust bag, wrenches, regular and face-frame blades, manua...
