Just starting

So now is the time to make the drawer unit wagon that just go with study desk for my son.

It is just simple structure, but I drew a plan anyway.

wagon

This is a plan before the drawers, just to check the sizes.

First, I thought to make it without slide rails, which exposes metal parts to my wooden work, but the drawers have to be pull easily with one hand, and now I think it's better to use the slide rail. Especially this is for my little kid, it will be harder for him to pull the drawers with two hands while he sits at the desk… What do you think?

This wagon is not something so special, but the only high-light is the use of the top. It usually go under the desk, but you can also put it aside, and bring it higher at the same level of the desk, it will be a wider desk top he can use. I am thinking of 2 small book stands will be a good idea to put underneath this wagon, so it makes the wagon as high as the desk.

top, sides and bottom

Oh it takes long time…
Just finished preparing the top, 2 sides and bottom part. All write ash.

The top is the series of the top from the desk.
Put an indian rose butterfly as a pair from the other one from the desk. I did the last one with router and straight bit, but for this time, I wanted to try it only with hand tool. And found out it's easier to do it with chisels to make the corners sharp.

For the side parts, I put 2 pieces togther with SPLINED EDGE JOINT, in Japanese we call it "Yatoizane Hagi". It literally means "employed piece joint", So the little long piece is employed by the main pieces… I think this is a famous joinery technique in Japan for a long time. Easier than biscuit joint for me.

Now I am going to put all them together, but there are some steps to do before that. Oh, I have to get some slide rails…
