It pays to be persistent - 1 reply

I ‘ve been watching craigslist like a hawk for free materials for a long time. Lately I have been lead to believe I was going to get a couple black walnuts, but that deal ended up falling through. Well my luck changed today! I just got back from picking up a load of maple after answering an ad for free wood in the next town over from me. M...

Some words of inspiration - 4 replies

I found this quote in a recent issue of fine woodworking. It’s a very inspirational quote, and I have since printed it out, framed it and hung it in the shop. “Few people have the skill woodworkers have, to build things with their hands and with machines. Few people have the patience, the knowledge, the determination, and obsessio...

Checking out if anyone is interested in some black walnut? - 33 replies

I might be scoring some walnut logs, and would love to share it with some fellow lumberjocks. I am curious if anyone in the chicagoland area might be interested in some freshcut walnut for a very reasonable price. I’ll know more as soon as I hear back from the guy with the trees.

Chalk one up for Craigslist again - 5 replies

I just bought a nice group of tools found on craigslist. I got 4 Eric Anton Berg chisels from the late 1800’s to the mid 1940’s, an old rosewood Stanley#25 bevel guage, and an old rosewood Stanley#77 marking guage all for $20. When I got home, I went right out to the shop and sharpened up the chisels, and polished them up a little...

Homemade wet grinder ( Tormek style) - 5 replies

I found these pics after scouring the web looking for a cheap but reliable method of wet grinding plane and chisel blades. It’s a cheap and dirty Tormek! I am really thinking about trying this out. I already have a 1750 rpm motor so I figure that I just need a pair of pillow blocks, an axle, and some homemade tool rest. The rest of the ...

24" diameter walnut logs for sale - 3 replies

I found this add in craigslist for 2-8’long 2’ diameter walnut logs. He’s asking $1000 for both, ridiculous I know. I emailed him, and he said he’d take $400 for both. I don’t have the cash or I’d get them myself, so if anyone wants them, they are in Naperville.

craigslist score - 14 replies

I just got off the phone with a fellow who has just cut down a few mulberry trees that were between 12”-24” diameter. He’s GIVING them away to me and luckily I have first dibs on it since I was first to respond. I have looked up what mulberry looks like, and it has a beautiful color that changes to a color similiar to osage ora...

American elm milling and drying tips please - 11 replies

My next door neighbor just had his large American elm tree cut down today, and I got the 36” diameter, 8’ long main trunk of the tree for free. I’m planning on getting that heavy trunk over to a semi-local sawmill; there is only one guy milling lumer that I know of around here, and he’s 40 miles away in Indiana. I’v...
