What have I got here? - 9 replies

Saw an ad in the local classifieds… Maple, free, you haul away. Huh?! Oh YEAH! The people had a forked tree in their back yard and lost one fork to a storm. They had already cut it into log sections varying from say, 16” – 2’ (more’s the pity). I had my doubts (still do, that’s why I’m here) becaus...

What to do with a fallen hickory tree (re, the lumber)? - 7 replies

Ok, answer to question- “Cut it up.” That’s for all the ‘cut ups’ out there. Now, this is what I know hickory is good for. Smoking grills (I prefer mesquite actually) and tool handles. I have a trunk section suitable for making into planks. But, once done, what would I make with them? One other thought comes...

guarding against termites? - 7 replies

Hi y’all,I have been acquiring, with no immediate end in sight, a large stock of pallet wood, 1x, 2x, 3 & 4 x, oak and pine. I have to store it outside. I am planning on putting up something like a three sided hay barn, say… about 20’ x 40’ ft. For the record, I have planned to do something like this for some time an...

help selecting resaw blades - 28 replies

Hello all. I found a source for free wood and I am piling it up. It’s pallets from an industrial AC manufacturer. A lot of these pallets appear to have been just made for sheet steel and only used once. Some are as long as 8 and a few even 10” long. A lot of 2×3s, 3×4s and even 4×4s, some of them oak. Not having a...

Need some wiring help on band saw - 6 replies

I am putting a riser kit on my band saw and had to disconnect the switch to do it. I thought I was going to complete it right away so didn’t take any pictures of the hook up like I usually do when taking apart things with which I am not fully versed in. Well, some time has passed and now I don’t know which plug goes where. I had t...

what is this anyway??? - 10 replies

Hi all.I found this in a shed full of things a recently widowed friend had that we were sorting for disposal, some through yard sales or ebay if salable enough. Anyway, My best guess is a mortar as in Mortar & pestle or a mallet for tapping a chisel for light carving. Frankly though, neither seems really very likely. Any ideas? Thanks!

What to do with some hickory planks? - 8 replies

I have made acquaintance with a fellow that has his own saw mill. (and I have some forest land, joy of joys!) (:) He also happened to give me some planks of air dried hickory about 1” x 9” x 6’ though there are a few thinner and longer. I’ve posted a pic below for y’all to see. That top board is the worst of the lo...

Hard wood, where do you find this stuff?! - 19 replies

I see people talking about using beautiful hardwods. Where are they getting this stuff??? I live in a rural area so our option of stores is limited. All we have here are like Lowes, HD, McCoys, Surplus Warehouse and that’s abouit it. They sell oak and poplar and that’s about it. While not a hard wood, cedar is pretty but that is...

How to work a Blog? - 4 replies

I am not overly computer literate, I have never made a “blog” before, barely know what one is. Well, since one came with registration I thought I’d give it a whirl to record the process of building up my shop largely from the floor up. So I made my first entry. I’ve made some progress and thought to add to it. It see...

What will an HF dovetail jig do/not do? - 8 replies

Sorry to bring up yet another HF tool question but, I have read through many threads and not found the answer to my question.First of all, please never mind the “All HF stuff is crap” type replies. This same jig is sold by others (as are many other HF items) for as much as $100+. I’m on a fixed income and have never used a dove...
