Welcome to LumberJocks. There are lots of knowledgeable and friendly folks here. Try the shuffle feature if you have not already. It is a great way to see some of the older content. Enjoy the site.

John,

Here’s a link to my baby: http://www.cloudynights.com/item.php?item_id=1096

I don’t have any construction pics but let me just say it took almost 5 months to see first light and I didn’t grind the mirror!

What are you planning for your 8”? If there’s one thing I love it’s planning a telescope project.

I checked out your post of the “astro-scan” scope, Nice. I commented there that I have been thinking of a split ring design. I really thought that I would like to have equatorial instead of just alt/az for this one, but other people I have talked to say that the split rings can pose other problems…Your eight inch rotating dob is beautiful. You really took your time and did a great job. I appreciate your comment about spending more time look at the telescope than through it as it is the same here in Massachusetts. You get so many cloudy nights, and then oh! stars! but drat, the transparency is lousy….not to mention either the cold or the mosquitoes…pick one…

We had someone in the club just complete a split ring. The whole project only took him 40 years. Apparently he’s a procrastinator ;-). My issue with the split ring is the tight clearances needed to make the scope move through the ring and that the ring is usually so large it would seem to get in the way when looking towards zenith. That doesn’t mean they don’t work, just be on the lookout. I’ve got an equatorial platform ready to go – sans motor drive. I can’t get the stepper motors to stop vibrating at tracking speed. I need to gear it down and I just can’t get motivated to complete that one.

Since you live in St. Louis, I’d like to invite you to come to meetings of the St. Louis Woodworkers Guild. We have about 110 members, most being amateur weekend woodworkers. You can learn about the SLWG from our website at www.stlwoodworkersguild.org. The time/location for meetings is on the website. Look me up if you come to a meeting. I have some interest in sundials, so maybe your telescope activities might have some intersection of mutual interest. Don Snyder, VP SLWG
