Make your own Home-Made Stain. This is nothing more than Steel Wool and Vinegar, yet the colors are amazing. Different wood creates different colors as you can see from the pictures.

This is a traditional stain used to ebonize (blacken) walnut.

nice work, I wanted to experiment with making stains a while back. I looked into coffee and tea.
