A very pleasant surprise

For the past few days I have been in the shop cleaning, organizing, and router planing stock to build my work bench. Yesterday I came across a few things to part with via Craigslist and a few odds and ends for the scrap pile.
One of my neighbors stopped over when he seen my old jeep with the back opened to my workshop door.
We chatted for a bit, and he asked if he could send an old piece of junk with me to the scrap yard.

Needless to say I found myself quite shocked when he thumped this down on the ground a few minutes later.

I immediately asked him how much he wanted for it. His response- “I don’t care what you do with it, damn thing is broke.”

I’m happy to say it is not broke. Gummed up and hard to function sure, no doubt it needs a break down and good cleaning. It has been sitting under his workbench for years!

A good cleaning and fresh lube it will get and probably a new handle too. However I’m not one who will resurface and apply fresh paint.

His stubbornness would not allow me to pay him one cent even though he just save me well over a hundred bucks.
Looks like I’ll be picking up some beer for the neighbor. Its the least I can do!

Nice score! Be sure to post some “after” photos when you get it cleaned up. Doesn’t look like it would even need new paint anyhow. Beer definitely in order.

Cheers,
Tom

I will be sure to update with after pics, but it will be a while. I won’t clean it up until I am ready to install it on the bench- which isn’t built yet.
And I agree about the paint. Over all, it is in very nice shape.
The Son in Law thinks I should sandblast and repaint it. I personally think that would be sacrilege!

You got a very nice vice there.

My vice is getting sticky and I need to clean and lube the threads. What do you plan on using on yours?

I’m not exactly sure. That will require a bit of research I think.

Anyone have suggestions on what is best?

You definitely deserve a “You Suck” for that awesome score! Congrats!! I’m with you, I wouldn’t paint it either.

Very nice. I got my dad one line this at an estate sale last year. Needed a little cleaning and a new spring for the quick release, but after that it worked like a charm!

Thanks guys.

I’ve started thinking I should ask him what other “junk” he’s hiding over there!
