Nice upgrade

Nice upgrade

I’ve been woodworking for about 15 years now. One of my first machines was a Jet JJ-6CSX jointer. It is your basic entry level floor standing machine. It has served me well over these many years, but I frequently found its capacity lacking. I wanted to upgrade to a 10” or 12” jointer, but was stymied by the fact that my shop is in my basement, and the only access is very limited. So I settled on an 8”. I figured it would do 98% of all the jointing I will ever need. So, 8” it is; but wh...

RTJ-400 Dovetail Jig review

RTJ-400 Dovetail Jig review

Working on a dresser for my daughter. I decided to do the drawers with dovetail joints. Let me preface with what I am about to say with the facts that I never owned a dovetail jig, and I have never cut dovetails by hand. I have a very close friend who has a Rockler dovetail jig, and he graciously offered to let me use it. Meanwhile, I kinda had my eye on purchasing the Leigh RTJ400 jig. There are quite a few blogs and equipment reviews that touch on this topic, but I wanted to add my own firsthand experience. First was the decidedly difficult nature of setting the knives on a standard cutterhead. I’ve read lots of articles and blogs that made it sound really simple, and those...

Jet 17" Floor Standing Drill Press

Jet 17" Floor Standing Drill Press

When I started wood working, a drill press was one of my first tool acquisitions. I bought a Delta 12 inch benchtop model, that has served me well, and continues to do so. Last year when I embarked on the “21st Century Workbench” project (see my project posts), I knew that the little Delta wasn’t going to be up to the task. It doesn’t have the necessary spindle travel to get through 3 inches of lumber, which was required for drilling the dog holes. There had been a...

Lathe upgrade

Lathe upgrade

02-16-2010 05:43 PM by Jarrhead | 7 comments »

I recently decided to upgrade my lathe from the Delta midi-lathe I began turning on. I spent a lot of time researching which lathes were available on the market. Some of the most helpful information was found right here on Lumberjocks.com. Thank you to all who took the time to share your viewpoints and experiences. It made my decision easier. I settled on the Nova DVR XP, but I must say that it was not my first choice. My first choice was the Powermatic 3520B. I had to make some compro...
