My first handcut dovetails....yikes! - 16 replies
Ehh….not too stoked on these. I have made had a few attempts using my veritas dovetail sawguide system on some yellow pine. Results were not good. Decided to break down the Bailey No. 4 this week to go over it, see how they go together, and attempt to sharpen the blade (my first sharpening of any sort) for the first time. Took it apart, and noticed the japan...

Well, I went and pulled the trigger on the hand planes at the local antique store. One Stanley Bailey no. 4, one Stanley Bailey no. 5, and a Shelton No. 14. Here are some pics. The No. 4 has a “C” stamped on the base, yet the sole isn’t corrugated. Hmm. I was thinking thats what the C stood for. Maybe it has been machined? Got ...

What to look for in vintage hand planes? - 6 replies
Found a few Stanley #4 and #5 for under $30 each at a local antique store. One had come small pitting on the bottom, but appeared to be cleaned and oiled. Can I go wrong for that price? They seemed to have all the parts and mostly all original with the exception of a knob or handle. I’m a newbie to handtools..heck, I’m a newbie to wo...
