95% self-taught. While I enjoy carving, especially in the Northwest Coast Native style, my real love is "straight" work - i.e. total woodworking.
In my work, which is right now about 50-50 commission and stock work, I try to incorporate all facets of the various arts I have picked up over the years. This includes carving, lapidary, paint and inlay of various sorts.
While I enjoy my 'stock' creations (sort of normal jewelry boxes, memory keepers, etc.) I like to go wild once in a while which can be seen in my "Apollo" and "Route 66" pieces. At the moment I am working on a piece which, for lack of a better name, is presently entitled Niagara. I won't try to describe it but you should be able to get some idea of it from the working name.
Creating commissions is perhaps the most satisfying work I can do. If I can listen closely enough to a client and grasp their intentions well enough to animate a piece that they will love that is the best thing in the world of woodworking art for me.
