Well, So far so good.. The glue has set and now I have a nice 13×18 inch blank to work with. I have traced the shape design on it, and have cut it out with the bandsaw. This left some material on each side that will be extremely valuable to finish the project. I am really starting to feel good about it. So far everything has worked out as planned. There are going to be so many little pieces that will have to be made The only thing I am worried about is not being able to complete it before the deadline, but that shouldn’t be too much of an issue. I’ll try to post a few ‘sneak peek’ pictures tonight, but not to give you too much info.
If you can guess what it is, post it here. I’ll let you know if you get it right. I gave a really good hint in the first blog posting. You just have to do a little research to get the answer.

With all the small parts it must be a miniature model circus that is set on a 13×18 platform.

Zuki! No one was actually supposed to check my homepage! I was joking about the research!
Zuki, as the grand prize winner, you have won a fabulous life on lumberjocks where you will be able to research everything about woodworking and speak directly to many craftsmen all over the world getting tips and advice! All of this at no cost to you!
Yep.. I guess you can say that I am attempting to make somewhat of a replica of a Gibson Les Paul guitar. It will be mostly full size, except for the depth of the body and neck. Of course as I said before, it will not be functional, since this is a ‘one 2×4’ project, and not a ‘one 2×4, electronics, tuners, strings, etc.’
Okay.. Here you go…
Below is a pic of the stamp on the wood. I cut the 2×4 up prior to taking a picture, so here is what has not been cut up yet, this will go into making the fretboard, frets, pickups, pickup rings, etc..

Below is the teaser pic that I was originally going to put up, but since Zuki ruined it all… :) (just kidding)

Below is another teaser pic that I was going to post.. This is what is left after cutting the body with the bandsaw. Will be used for the tuners, nut, stopbar/tailpiece, knobs, strap buttons, pickguard, etc.

Here is some pictures of the body so far. 4 – 18 inch long jointed pieces were edge-glued together to make the body blank, then the body was cut out with my bandsaw. I have started carving the top of the guitar, but have a lot more to go to even it all up and make it symetrical. If you notice the edges and back of the body are still a little rough. I am waiting until I finish carving the top before I clean these up.

The ony good 2×4 I could find in the pile that I bought was this one, and it had a few knots in it.
Hopefully it will turn out okay.. If not, I’ll at least be able to say that I made a Gibson Les Paul guitar out of ‘ONE 2×4’!

Pretty good Jamie. I guess it’s not a little circus after all.

great. That was what I was thinking about also. But I think the rules allow you to add acessories that are not from the 2X4. It’s just all of the wood is from the 2X4. So add your electronics, and all of the required parts.

I agree with Karson.
Electronics would be the do-dads mentioned in the rules and not a building material.

I guess I could go all the way, but the neck would never hold the tension of the strings. Plus after I got into it, I thought it would be neat to make everything out of the same piece of wood, and have something that looks like the real thing, but is actually just a piece of art. If it turns out good, I’ll definately hang it up… probably in my family room.

Gary, maybe I should have made a minature circus. That actually sounds like a neat idea, but I’m 2 days into this one..

Very cool. This whole single 2×4 thing is impressive. I am enjoying seeing what people can get out of a board. The limitations of material seem to intensify the creativity. I gotta get me some of that.
