First Segmented Bowl

This is my first attempt at a segmented bowl. It is made from a total of 74 pieces of Curly Maple and Walnut.

I relied software to generate the initial plans and cut-list since I had no idea what I was doing. Strips were cut using the table saw, then finished and normalized with a planer. The angled cuts were all made with my miter saw (after building a ZC fence and fine tuning the angle). The last pic shows the 6 rings glued up and ready to start stacking.

The finish is spray lacquer (my first time for that too). Unfortunately, the heat from the branding iron caused the inlaid maple medallion on the bottom to split (I guess it was too thin), but I’m going to claim that it provides character. :)

This was a REALLY fun project and I’m looking forward to doing quite a few more like it. My imagination is already reeling at the options and ideas for trying basic laminations, multi-generation laminations, thin veneers, and combining various species. Now if ONLY I had to the shop time to be able to keep up with my designs! :)

Anyway, thanks for looking!

Spalted Bowl

This is my second bowl ever made. I gave it to my wife as her Valentines Day present. It is made from a piece of Spalted Hackberry that I bought. I didn’t do anything fancy with the shape, I just wanted to get some more experience and confidence with bowl making.

I added a maple medallion inlaid on the bottom so that I could use my new branding iron to “sign” it. It was sanded to 600 grit, then finished with 3 coats of gloss wipe-on poly for durability.

Segmented Mills v1.0

I made these as a wedding gift for my step-daughter and soon to be step-son. This is my first attempt at segmented turning of any kind. I’m very pleased with how they came out thus far! :)

They are made as mirror images using walnut and maple. I designed them so that the 2 lower bands would resememble rings to represent their wedding. I had seen people use the Celtic knot design used in other projects and thought it would be a good feature to highlight the center of the bodies for these mills. They were sanded to 600 grit then I applied a bit of oil to accent the grain and shellac as an initial sealer. The final finish is 3 coats of gloss wipe-on polyurethane for durability.

Now we just have to see how they hold up to the test of time.

Magnetic Puzzle Sign

This is a Christmas gift that I just finished for my 3yr old Grandson. The idea was to have it serve triple duty:

A simple puzzle for him to play with.

The backing can be used for dry-erase drawings when the pieces are removed.

To hang on the wall/door of his room as a sign when not in use.

A learning experience for me to try the scroll saw and get some idea of what intarsia might be like.

It started off as one of those magnetic dry-erase signs, a pattern, and some walnut and curly maple I had on-hand. The pieces have 3/8” rare-earth magnets inset into their backs so that they will stay when the unit is hung on the wall. The finish is a shellac and BLO sealer coat followed by about 4-6 coats of Minwax gloss wipe-on poly.

Overall, the project was a lot of fun to make. It was my first attempt at a scroll saw project and taught me that I have a LOT to learn. I definitely need to figure out how to cut the pieces more accurately for a consistent fit/gap between the species and refine my skills/process for rounding and shaping the pieces after they have been cut. It definitely piqued my interest in doing some more intarsia work in the future! :)

The wood was a piece of silver maple that was provided as part of the class. The finish started with walnut oil and then a friction polish was applied to give it a bit more shine.

I also added a picture of the mallet which was the first project we finished in this class. The mallet is rock maple with a BLO and wax finish.
