« Part 5: "If cleanliness is next to godliness, then I'm giving those Greek cats a run for their money." Part 6 of JC4 Journal series Part 7: I thought home ownership was going to be fun... »

A wise woodworker once told me “Every woodworker should know at least one guy named jeremiah, but it doesnt really matter… So forget it.” That woodworker was me… So forget it.

But hey, I’m back! For now. And man I tell ya it’s been an interesting few weeks. Busy and interesting few weeks. Sold a bunch of old music gear i havent used in 5 or 6 years and made a couple grand so i upgraded some of my more frequently used tools! Of course i bought tools… Here’s the rundown:

Kreg router table
Kreg router lift (loooong story here)
DW618 Router
DW682 Joiner
DWS502 TrackSaw
PM701 Mortiser
Incra Miter 1000 (or something like that)

Managed to get all those for a pretty good price, under $2000 for all believe it or not. My former employer is a DeWalt dealer so he gave me a bunch off those three items. The TrackSaw is my personal favorite already. I hate trying to cut sheet goods. Even with my R4512 table saw i still find it a huge pain in the ass, especially in a small shop. I havent even used it yet, but i love it. I set it all up yesterday when it came and am very impressed with how smooth everything seems to work! Post a review when I use it maybe.

The Incra miter gauge, short and sweet, awesome! I never thought id find a miter gauge that id actually want to use, but this one is it. I love how accurate it is, super smooth, and the telescoping stops are clever.

The mortiser is slated to get here tomorrow, i’m pretty excited about it as well. I was going to get the Grizzly model but i didnt think Powermatic’s bench version was too badly priced, so i snagged one. Unfortunately I’ve neglected to buy chisels for it still, but i dont have a need for it for maybe another couple weeks (depends on how the current orders go).

However not all is sunshine and rainbows flying out of pixies butts… The Kreg router table is a “i cant seem to win” situation. First off, I love kreg! I have a myriad of kreg stuff. I actually use the pocket hole jigs for anything that doesnt need to be “too fancy.” Love the clams, love the screws, i have the rip cut and love it, i have their fancy push thing i cant remember the name of, i have the shelf pin jig, just LOVE Kreg!

So anyways. I was torn between the kreg table and the bench dog one you attach to your table saw, liking the features and the fence on the Kreg one, i went with that. I already had a Rockler Router FX i bought on sale so i passed on the lift. So the day it shows up, i get the table and the fence, in two boxes, no base. They apparently sell the three separate and when you buy the table “kit” you get them separate. Wouldnt have cared except it was friday before the long weekend. Decided to set up the table anyways. got it together, set it on the saw horses, put the DW816 motor i bought for it in the lift, set the lift in the hole and realized, it didnt fit. Too small. So i swore a little, had a beer, and called it a day (this was at 7pm or so). The next day i decided i would just take the lift mechanism off the rockler plate and put it on the kreg plate. No big deal. And it wasn’t, except it didnt seem to still work quite right, which baffled me becuase i used the original plate ON TOP of the kreg plate as a guide with a drill press. So i caved and bought the kreg router lift. In the mean time i decided id use the makeshift version until the new lift came. So i set it up, screwed it down, and oddly enough it worked correctly, no binding or pinching anymore, of course now with the new lift on the way. So fast forward to today: new lift comes, what do you know? My router doesnt fit in it without special blocks… Like I said, cant win.

The weather around here isnt being too kind to me lately either. It’s been rainy and making it hard to get materials between storms. But thats mother nature for you. I get maybe its because i’m using helpless trees to make money… who knows.

Anyhow, thats it for now. Check back for some new projects and a couple reviews.

Thanks! It’s all good, just a huge let down all the way around. The FX i attached to the kreg phenolic plate will suffice for now.
