Milk Paint over Danish Oil - 11 replies

Hi all – I tried adding a stripe of milk paint (1/16” wide) on a box. The box is finished with three coats of Watco Danish Oil (walnut). I pulled the masking tape off and almost all the paint came off with it. I had made test pieces where it worked fine. I think my paint was a bit thicker on the box then on the test piece, but not si...

Removing Dowels - 20 replies

My wife wanted an old barn door to hang in our pantry in our kitchen. She found one but it was 30” wide rather than the required 24”. I was required to make it work. I’ve dismantled the door and found that it was held together with 5/8”s dowels with no glue. They are just long and tight and have held the thing together fo...

New Mitre Box from LV - 6 replies

Anyone seen this yet? http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=76038&cat=51&ap=1 Looks like a pretty slick set up compared to the plastic pieces of junk one can get. Might have to put it on the Christmas list this year.

Camo Tools! No thank you. - 11 replies

I just got the flyer from Princess Auto (Canada’s version of Harbor Freight). They are selling tools painted in camouflage. No thanks. I have a hard enough time trying to find my tools at the best of times. I’d lose a day of work every week if my marking knife were camouflaged.

Battery powered led - lightweight - 4 replies

Hi everyone – I’m working on a new project and need to put a light source inside a 2 1/2” cube. It needs to be battery powered as there can be no cords coming from it. It also needs to be as lightweight as possible as the whole thing needs to be suspended from a magnet. I think I have a plan but electrical pixies confuse me and...

What is this tool? - 3 replies

Saw this ad on my local kijiji. Thought I might try to help the guy out but I’m stumped. It looks like some sort of lathe attachment but I’m not sure how useful it would be: Thanks.

Help with a euro hinge disaster - 18 replies

Good evening jocks,Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for this problem. My three year old decided to hang off a cabinet door in my kitchen and pulled the door right out of the cabinet side. Took quite a lot of the substrate with the hinge. I’ve never used these materials before but thought if could fill the gap with epoxy and put...

Hi everyone,I got an amazon.ca gift card and was looking at the Morakniv hook knives. I’ve never used one before but would like one for carving spoons. Amazon carries the 162, 163, & 164. Tool Tote in by Hand & Eye - 4 replies

Hi everyone,I’m looking at the tool tote in By Hand & Eye and see that the end boards are 1 module wide by 1 2/3 modules high. Tolpin and Walker describe this as being a ratio of 4:7. That doesn’t seem right to me though wouldn’t it be 3:5? The width is 3/3s and the height is 5/3s. Am I missing something here?

Long Shot: Need parts for a post drill - 1 reply

Hey everyone,This is probably a long shot but I picked up a post drill for $20 from my local kijiji (Canadian craigslist). It is in decent enough shape but is missing the auto feed mechanism. The drill is a Canadian Blower & Forge Company no. 155. Hoping to get it restored and working in my shop soon but figure it will be hard to use without...

Bevel Up vs Bevel Down Jack Plane - 8 replies

Hi all,My wife wants to get me a new plane for my birthday and I could use a new jack plane. I’m leaning towards the Veritas low angle jack plane ( http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=49708&cat=1,41182,41186,49708 ). From almost everything I’ve read it’s a solid performer. However, I have seen some, Paul Sellers be...

Hinge mortise depth - 5 replies

Hi everybody,I think I know the answer to this but I wanted to check it against the collective wisdom of LJs. I’m building a chuck box for my brother and he needs to keep costs down. I bought some fairly inexpensive brass hinges and am not terribly impressed with them. Here is a photo: As you can see, when the hinge is closed the sides ...

Ruskin on "Taste" - 2 replies

In light of a certain recent thread I thought this passage was particularly appropriate. It comes from the lecture “Traffic” in the book The Crown of Wild Olive by John Ruskin, the grandfather of the Arts and Crafts movement. You can read the whole thing here: http://www.victorianweb.org/authors/ruskin/traffic.html. edit: I’...

Wanted - Live Centre for a HF lathe - 7 replies

Hi, I’ve got a Harbor Freight Lathe (34706) and I’ve lost the point for the live centre. It fell out while I was turning a bowl and it got swept up with the shavings. I’m hoping someone has an extra one that they would be willing to sell. I know it’s a long shot but I thought I’d ask.
