Recent happenings aka What on earth is Vigilink - 43 replies
I’ve seen a number of posts lately about ads being placed within member’s postings and from what I have seen most people aren’t happy with it. The biggest complaint is that LJ is changing what we are posting. LJ admins say that only non-members should be able to see those links (but us members can) but that doesn’t change...

How to hang a shelf in this space - 9 replies
Hi Lumberjocks,My parents just moved into a new smaller house and my mom is looking for a way to get more space out of her kitchen. We had an idea to put a shelf above the island. She is fine with shelf brackets but I think it would look better if I could put up a shelf without any visible hardware. But I can’t think of anyway of doing it....

Congratulations advertisers - 28 replies
Just saw the “Announcement” (ahem, advertisement) for RTA cabinets on the main forum page. Way to reach your target audience by advertising to a group of people who actually build your product themselves. Not exactly your bread and butter customers. I don’t mind ads if they are relevant, this seems like a waste of everyone̵...

Sawstop adjustments - 10 replies
I was at my local Lee Valley today (see: http://lumberjocks.com/topics/65237) and played around with their floor model of the 1.75 HP cabinet saw. I found the two hand wheels for adjusting the blade difficult to reach without bending over. They seem to be terribly low placed on the saw’s cabinet. So people who have a SS do you find it out ...

Lee Valley Customer Service - 3 replies
I snapped my roughing gouge a few days ago right at the ferule. I brought it in to Lee Valley just to ask if I could have done anything differently to stop it from breaking. They took one look at it and said, “Nope, it shouldn’t do that. Let me see if we have a replacement”. So now I’m back at the lathe and back to work. ...

Veritas Unveiling - 6 replies
Anyone know what Lee Valley is coming out with tomorrow? I talked to a guy at the store today he said, ” I’d tell you but they’d kill me, or I’d have to kill you. One or the other!” However, he added that if you make A&C furniture you might want to be there.

Harbor Freight 34706 and equivalent power - 9 replies
My wife wants a farm style kitchen table with big turned legs. I was planning on glueing up some 6”x6”x29” blanks to turn those legs from but I’m not sure if my lathe will spin them. Anyone else ever turn anything that size on this lathe?

I’m looking at getting a 45 for my birthday and saw this one for sale. Does it look like everything is there? I’m hoping to talk him down in price though I don’t have much more than $75 to spend. Mitred box chip out help - 4 replies
Hi Lumberjocks. I’ve been working on a jewelry box for my little sister and have this beautiful piece of spalted birch to work with. It’s a pretty piece of wood but really soft and prone to hopping and tearing. I know I’m not going to get a perfect finish with this. However when I was cutting my mitred corners I got a big chunk...

Miller Falls 110 Miter Box - 5 replies
Does anyone here use a Miller Falls 110 Miter Box? Is it any good? The mechanism seems very similar to the miter box I already have (an orange no name thing) and I am not overly impressed with it. Does yours work well? Or would you recommend looking elsewhere? Thanks.

Vinegar and Steel Wool Ebonizing - 11 replies
I’m trying a steel wool and vinegar finish on spf and I’m not getting the dark finish that I’m seeing other people get. Instead I’m getting a red-brown that does not look nice at all. I’m using regular white vinegar and extra fine steel wool from Lee Valley. One thing I’ve noticed is that the wool doesnR...

Blog Navigation - 2 replies
I was just wondering if it was possible to have the button that gets you to the next blog posting in a series at the bottom the entry rather than at the top. That way when you are finished reading an entry you don’t have to scroll back up to the top to get to the next entry.

Turnings coming out oval shaped - 18 replies
So I turned a pen for a Christmas present and once I put it together I noticed a problem. Here is the photo: As you can see the wood is not flush with hardware. When it was on the lathe it matched the bushings perfectly and it matches the hardware on the opposite side of the pen perfectly. It appears that the blank is being turned in an oval ...
