no previous part Part 1 of Work bench series no next part

I finally started setting up my shop and I needed a work area. I didn’t really want to go buy something pre-made so I figured my first big project would be my own bench.

I wanted something heavy so I went with a 2×4 laminated top and used 4×6 for the legs. all the lumber was from lowes and I planed and joined it.

so far I have about 16 hours into the project. Here is list of what has been done

ran the boards for the top through the planer
used the joiner on some boards that were too wide
setup 3 different glue up sessions to put the top together – ran sections of 4 boards through the planner after glue up
cut lap joints on the side struts and the legs
drilled holes for walnut pins to hold the joints
glued up the legs and struts and pounded in the wood dowels
sanded the tops of the legs to be level
drilled 1.5 inch holes in the top of the table
attached the top with lag bolts
covered the holes with 1.5 inch maple dowels
Here are the pictures so far

I still need to do a lot of sanding and finish leveling the top. I plan to cover the ends of the top with walnut and use tongue oil on the entire top (probably take about 5 coats)

I have done some smaller projects but I had just upgraded to some more serious tools and a dedicated work space so this is my first really project as a woodworker. I learned a lot during the process that I will be able to apply to my next project. plus it was fun.

I’ll post the finished project (hopefully in a couple of weeks)
