I haven’t had time last year to do any wood working, but Christmas time came and I had to give presents to two people. Actually for more than two, but for two I didn’t know what to buy. So I decided to make something. One of those presents is not wood related (I made a pirate clock out of saw blade and mosaic), and the second present is a clo-bike, bike with two clocks. Inside of the wheels is mosaic.
Bike is made out of oak. The person who I gave it to liked it.

glass + wood = daisy

My attempt to inlay glass. I didn’t know how to do that, so I was trying to figure out / learn how to do that. Not an easy thing (at least for me)... It didn’t turn out as good as I hoped, but it’s not too bad.
Wood is oak (the only wood I had at home). Finish is wipe-on-poly.

Maybe you can give me an advice how to make a precise cut for inlaying glass, which tool is better to use?

It turned out a little bit childish… :). The colours that you see is glass. That was my first attempt to combine wood and glass.

Magazine stand. My second woodworking project and my first piece of furniture.

After I made my first woodworking project, Purple Martin bird house ( http://lumberjocks.com/projects/13557 ) for 80 years old man, I decided to make for the same man magazine stand as a Christmas present. This person receives lots of different catalogs via postal mail and he use to have magazine stand, but lately his magazines and catalogs were all over the place. So… I decided to try to make my first piece of furniture and my second woodworking project.
This project was WAY out of my league since I don’t know how to make furniture and making bird house was my only woodworking experience. And the only person who could give me an advice was that 80 years old man, but at the same time I couldn’t ask him for advice because I was making present for him. So… I really had to put my brain to work on this one… It might not be 100% perfect… but I’m really proud of it! And if honestly, I feel like it’s a miracle that it turned out good )))).
This magazine stand made out of solid oak. Dimensions are 24’’ W x 11’’ D x 23-3/4’’ H.It took me 12 days to make it (with some sleepless nights).
If you would like to see some of my other projects (most of them are mosaic), you can look at them here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/22079701@N07/.

Purple Martin Bird House. My first woodworking project.

Hi everyone!
First of all thank you for the warm welcoming on this web site! Very nice site! Tons of great stuff here!
Now some introduction…I’m a complete amateur. I don’t have any woodworking education and nobody ever showed me how to work with wood. But I like learning new skills and I like challenges :).
This summer I decided to make a Purple Martin bird house for one old man. He use to have two of those, so I decided to make him happy and build bird house for him.
I don’t have my own tools and I practically never worked with wood, but this man has tools, he use to work with wood long time ago, before he became a plumber.
He had a big doubts that I can make Purple Martin’s bird house, was asking me if I have any woodworking education, but after his son told him to let me try, he gave his “OK”. His son only showed me in 5 minutes basics of using overarm saw. That’s it. The rest I’ve done by myself. It took me one month to build this bird house. It’s not really unique and nothing special, but for now showing you this as an introduction.
So… here is my firs project to your judgment.

P.S. I used cedar to make it.
