Here’s the shop in progress. Big machines and not a ton of space. It’s 21’ long x 19.5’ wide, with a 8’6” ceiling. Right now everything is in transition, as you can see by the ridiculous mess and non-woodworking tools everywhere. I started a blog series that will chronicle the progress, and Lord willing, it will be a first rate shop in about a year!!
I love to turn, obviously, and can’t wait get everything organized. If I don’t get vetoed, the shelves will get moved to the basement, and cabinets and such will be installed in their place.
Current project: electrical. I have to install the lights, upgrade the service panel, and install a 3 phase rotary converter and breaker panel. Who knows where the money will come from, but I can at least turn in the meantime!
Thanks for looking,
Hutch

Hutch, you have a nice looking shop and it does look like you have a lot going on in there. Bummer about having to put the “non-essentials” in there with your wood working tools but I guess the bikes and lawnmowers have to go somewhere. I would not even suggest to my wife that she give up her garage space so that I could store the lawnmower in HER garage. I would be out in the rain before her vehicle would be. :) I am sure it is going to be fun to organize and upgrade your shop. I will be looking forward to seeing progress pictures of it.
Thanks for posting pictures of your shop. I enjoyed visiting with you.

Yeah, I have been very fortunate to be able to find good tools at good prices. I wasn’t intending to have a shop full of Rockwell tools, but it’s worked out that way. And I am glad, as these older machines were still made in America and are worth maintaining and repairing. I have worked at Woodcraft here in Grand Rapids for almost a year now, and I have learned a ton about the quality of manufacturing that has gone into today’s machinery. It’s unfortunate, but you really have to dish out a lot of money to truly have peace of mind about your purchase, and even then you may not have the quality that these ‘old standbys’ have.
Scott, I have been very fortunate to have a wife willing to give me the whole garage. But in truth, it was an understanding we had well before we tied the knot. She knew I wanted to have a go at professional woodturning/woodworking, and that whatever house we bought I had dibs on the garage. :) She has been amazing, as she continues to support my dream, even when the finances are tight.

Hey Hutch,
I can hear you with regards to a lovely supporting wife…...they are hard to find and if you have one like mine…..it’s a keeper. You have some great toy’s in your cave and with a little time and effort will turn that space into a fine shop…..well done.

Thank for the encouragement Splinterman! Yes, what a blessing to have that kind of support. We are lucky indeed!
Well, the lights are finally up and running! I think I will post pics in my blog a little later, but man is it nice to be able to see things!! :)

Very nice man, I see you got some tools and materials even it is usorted at the moment – never mind you have a space to work on – that is important. Defenatelly you need someone close who suports you and understands you well – or any dream will end sooner then you realise it is dead.
Well done keep it going. man!
