Extremely Average #158: The Gang Says "Hi"

1081 days ago by Ecocandle | 6 comments »

Hello All, Many of the past stars of my blog made cameo appearences tonight. The Twins, Archie The Mallet, and of course, Marey the jig saw, all helped out today. The jig, which is grotesquely over engineered, is comeing along nicely. I also thing that the accompanying narrative is one of my better ones. I hope you all enjoy it. http://bit.ly/9Jl7df Brian p.s. For those who enjoyed the story of “Winston the Camel”, I am pleased to announce that Josephine has writt...

Playset #1: The plan

1081 days ago by Roostermiester | 4 comments »

I’ve been planning this playset for nearly a year now and it is now finally in the making. I have built up some walls to level the play area using 6×6 PT timbers that were reclaimed from a school playground that was being renovated. Some of the lumber for this project came from a used playset that I bought for a couple hundred bucks last fall (mostly for the slide and swings). The rest of it I got off of CL for free from what used to be a redwood deck (I’ve also made some ...

"Don't Stress" glue ups

1086 days ago by dustbunny | 21 comments »

I got so tired of fighting with glueing up cutting boards. Is everything lining up ? Is there slipping ? One clamp at a time !!So I spotted these flooring jacks in the HF catalog...and I began to wonder.I bet that I could use these to clamp cutting boards together in hopefully one shot.I haven’t tried it yet, but I will let everyone know if there are problems.I am thinking this is going to work just fine.I may need to add regular clamps at the corners, we’ll see. I did h...

Drum Sander #1: From Micro to Macro

1108 days ago by BritBoxmaker | 13 comments »

Having thoroughly enjoyed making the Little Bess Ring Box, the smallest project I’ve ever made in boxes, I have decided to go to the other end of the scale. I’ve always hankered after a Drum Sander but could never afford the £500+ price tag. I idly tapped ‘drum sander’ into the search box and found that not only was I not alone in not being able to afford one but that there was a solution. Build you own. There are numerous ideas out there but the soundest seems to be ...

Panel Cutting Jig

1875 days ago by Dadoo | 22 comments »

A couple of whiles ago when I posted my lumber rack, some of the LJ’s inquired about my panel jig. I figured that if I ever needed to replace it, then it would be right to blog it for you. I’m not going to take credit for this as I have seen it somewhere else in one of the many woodworking mags. Just can’t remember which one! This jig is used lying on top of sawhorses or the bench to crosscut and rip large sheets of material. I say “material” because we’...

Ultimate Tool Stand

1109 days ago by Michael J | 12 comments »

Being relatively new to woodworking and building my new “shop”, which basically consists of a 2 car garage, I’ve finally got around to using those sheets of birch faced MDF that have been staring at me for 6 months to build the Ultimate Tool Stand. I think it’s the perfect solution for my garage as far as maximizing space and versatility. Mounting it on 4 inch casters will allow me the ultimate flexibility to roll it out of the way, but also outside for when I’...

Re-Jappaning an old friend - No. 80 scraper

1109 days ago by ratchet | 5 comments »

Been using this old No. 80 for a long time and it definitely appeared to have seen better days. As this tool is not a collectors item I decided it was time to refurb an olde friend. Used electrolysis to clean it up. Made up a solution of Japan mix using Asphaltum in a glass jar. Waited about a week – shaking a couple of times each day for it to dissolve/go completely in solution. Painted a couple of light coats of the solution on the no. 80, and then it went through a baki...

Jointer Setup

1115 days ago by thewoodwhisperer | 18 comments »

I find that the jointer is one of the most complex tools to calibrate. But if you ever used one that was out of shape, you know exactly why calibration is critical to your success. I hear from so many woodworkers who think their jointing problems are due to technique, when in reality, its the jointer itself that’s presenting the issues. Its a two-part process that starts with leveling the infeed and outfeed tables and making them coplanar. Next, you need to adjust the knives in...
