In recent years there’s been an influx of imported lower priced value hand planes hitting the market. Some are decent, some are marginal, some are a waste of money. In the lower price ranges, most newer planes use lower quality metal on all components, thinner blades, thinner castings, and poorer machining techniques. With an upgraded aftermarket blade, and some fettling, some of the low cost new planes can be made into useful tools, but many are an exercise in futility and frustrati...

Painted the last piece today, so here it is in all (or at least most) of it’s assembled glory.
Once again – the before:
And now the after:
As you can tell from the second pic, I haven’t gotten the lower axle/bearings back on it yet – same for the upper wheel. I did try freezing the axle to see if that’d let me press the axle in easily enough – didn’t seem to give it enough – so I’m going to have to find someone wi...

Spokeshave restore, refurbishThis is what I do…
Ok, here is the old chap ready for some LJ love.
Take it apart. (I discovered a defect, but since it’s a manual tool, this is no problem).
Remove the rust from the cap iron.
Sand it flat, so you will have a good contact to the blade.
Here you see it after, the flat area will secure a good contact now.
I choose also to work a little on the top of the cap, to round it, and make a nice sharp edge so the shaves will run...

I bought Mr. Sawdust’s book over a year ago anticipating I would soon find an older DeWalt RAS for the right price. The recent blogs by Blake and Patron really fueled the fire and I renewed my efforts. I’ve been cruising CL for the past months and while there must be 25 RAS at the moment on CL for my area, they were just not what I was looking for. My big problem is I don’t have a truck so would need to rent a trailer and all of the RASs I wanted to look at were up to a 2...

I have been resisting buying a Radial Arm Saw (RAS) for at least the last year. I have a great Sliding Compound Miter Saw, Router, and Table Saw. The only operation that seemed to be quick with a RAS that I could not easily do with the tools I have is making cross cuts using a dado set.
Last week Blake posted a project where he did a wonderful job restoring a 1959 DeWalt Radial Arm Saw. I really loved the job he did. Sunday afternoon I was browsing Craigslist and saw an ad for a saw si...

I picked up this DeWalt Radial Arm Saw (RAS) for about $50 from a nice older man in southern Massachusettes. It was his father’s and had been in his family since it was purchased new in 1960.
Here is a picture of it “in the wild” ( as I found it).
I took it home and began cleaning it up, lubricating moving parts, and then gave it a nice coat of hammered enamel paint. I constructed a “Mr. Sawdust” style table for it and calibrated all of the alignmen...

so In adventuring around town yesterday I found a DeWalt 7740 RAS. It was only five houses down. I was amazed to see a thirty dollar price tag. I started it and it ran amazingly quiet. so here it is the new project to add to my shop. After a small donation to OWW I downloaded a manual and am in the research stage of maybe make a new stand its a bit in the air. But we will see after the breakdown later today.

Bear with me this is my first blog. I’ve had a few comments on my homemade over arm dust collection on my Ridgid tablesaw. First off I’ll tell you why I made it, I was just plain tired of being covered up with saw dust when I used the saw. Now I’ll tell you how I made it and give you some part #’s in case you want to make one for yourself.
Here’s parts you will need:One T-connetor Rockler#88527I had some 4” flex hose laying around, in case you don’...

Since the router bits are now clean, I might as well sharpen them.
Yesterday I showed you how I clean saw blades, router bits and clean up the belt sander belts.
Since I’ve got the router bits clean and I was ready to put them away I figured I might as well sharpen them.
I use 3 in 1 oil with the sharpening tools on my router bits.
I use Eze-lap diamond paddles for sharpening.
Here is a place that carries them.
They come individually, sets of three and sets of ...

So it was off to Virginia last week. I’ve been going to Richmond pretty regularly for four to five years now and I really enjoy the area. It’s beautiful, there’s a ton of historical stuff in the area, and of course now that I’m visiting sawmills and lumberjocks, there’s no shortage of wood and sawdust themed adventures.
This was something of a short notice trip, so I didn’t have much chance to plan visits or scope folks with portable sawmills. Oddly e...
