So a friend of mine who works in NYC called me last week and said he has a wood has no idea what it is but he’s pretty sure its something exotic. It was a railing at a school that was outside and had been painted about 50 times. The railing was built in the early 60s so its in real bad shape. But I took it anyway. And boy am I glad I did. Its about 50 feet of 2by3. As I turns out its all purpleheart. I plained one piece down already and its pretty awesome. You cannot tell one bit what kind of wood it is until you cut or plain it because there is so much wweathering and paint. As soon as I figure out how to post pictures I will its pretty neat though I think.

Is it all round like a dowel? Kind of funny, it could have been bought for the purple color since it may have matched one of the school colors, and over the years everybody forgot about that, or some helpful individual painted them when they got dirty, to cover it up. Or maybe it just got painted because keeping the nice finish may have been perceived as too difficult. You never know. Nice score, in any event.

Have your say...
