Hello!
My name is Tom and I am currently in my early 40's and relatively new to woodworking. The easiest way to explain it is about 7 years ago my father passed away. He was always building something as a hobby. From furniture pieces to a house, he was never more comfortable unless covered in sawdust. At the time of his passing I had the opportunity to switch careers. I went into construction more as a necessity then a passion. I had a wife and family to help support. Before that, I had watched my father but never got involved. I listened and asked a few questions here and there but that was the extent of my education in woodworking. Jumping into construction opened my eyes and also showed me I had some skill with it. I framed a little, roofed more then I wanted too, and became somewhat proficient at it. A few years later I went to work for a husband and wife team building spec homes on the moderately high end. They liked to do a lot of built ins. I watched and helped a little with one and then was off. On the second house we did I did the fireplace, the unit in the study, both bathrooms and another inside the entry way from the garage. Shorty after that, my wife decided to go back into the U.S. Army. Since then I have been doing some kitchen cabinet installations and even ran a company doing about 2 a week and 3 to 4 granite counter top jobs a week. I have learned a lot of the last seven years but still have many questions to ask and more to learn. I do appreciate all comments, both good and bad and thank all who leave them!

Thank you for the welcome! It’s good to finally find a place with both active and constructive members. I have a lot to learn about woodworking, and patience because they go hand in hand. I have a rather strange beginning with this so I have major gaps in education. I look forward to being the one to ask stupid questions and laughing at the answers!
thanks,
Tom

Welcome Tom. You have found the right place for woodworking. A great group of people willing to help. Looking forward to see your projects and comments. Work safe in the shop and don’t forget to use pushsticks.

Thank you Hall. I am partial to me fingers and not partial fingers as my dad used to say. He always stressed pushsticks and blade height by asking exactly how much of my fingers did I want to cut off. Reminders are always welcomed and if someone sees me doing something stupid, please speak up!
