My workbench #4: router top added

Ok, got time and money together and added the router station part to my table. Used the Lee Valley Base plate. Had to borrow time on a drill press to add the holes, funny part, after putting the holes in perfectly. managed to drop the plate, put a chip in it. Small one, but drives me nuts… Hid it towards the rear. Also bought a Lee Valley T slot bit. Very happy with how the top turned out.. Simple and stable. The fence right now is basic. Going to add a better face later and dust collection.

At some point going to add the doors and slide drawers, but again time and money,, rarely do I have them together….

My workbench #3: frame together and top almost done

So during this holiday I have put some time into building my workbench.

Got the walls put together so the basic frame is done.

To do the extensions, well originally thought I might use pipe. But after a comment and looking at the suggestions went with wood extensions. using dowel as blockers.. I will post a pic of that later.

I am pretty happy with how its going.

My workbench #2: first set of walls

Well I was able to start working on the bench. There was a generous donation of a 2×10. Which I have ripped into my 2×2 frame pieces. I started on the Router side. And not having many clamps and not a tone of experience with say non symetrical face for drawers and such. I cut out the drawer holes and router door hole. Yes there is not a straight line to be had, and they will be hidden by drawer face later… lesson learned…

Have to finally break down and buy a hand plane too. just an eighth out on the plywood and frame. So I think a hand plane will do the job.. How bad can it go???

have the other router side wall done.. and now working on the far table wall..

Using 3/4 plywood. And the interior walls that really wont be shown using a rougher one. To keep costs low.

a bit at a time…

My workbench #1: Drawing done...

So I have a CAD drawing of my planned workbench…

It’s 2D and I will post the rough outline here. As I am not too fast with 3d yet and I have experience with just 2d drawings its not quite a production drawing. I use layers and colours instead of hidden lines and such.

It is a small table about 34 inches high (same as my table saw). 49 inches long and 30 inches wide. Though I have planned part of the top to extend and add about another 2 feet. My basement serves as my shop until I can afford to build a garage…. (why am I not rich?) I am also setting aside 20 inches for a router table. Don’t need it often but would be nice to have one. I am thinking of using some walnut pieces to make my T slots and mitre slot for it. (Have never used walnut, have a 6 ft piece to fiddle with, but man I dont want to just waste it.. So I will try it out as a slot,, if it goes bad I will just have to buy some.

I figure I will sorta blog this thing out. I figure it will take a month or more. The only thing I am dreading are the drawers.. I hate drawers, but cant just have shelves…
