I found a posting in the ‘Free’ section of Craig’s List for some scrap wood piled up next to the curb. It was on a street just a few streets over from where I live. So… I ran over and this is what I found on the curb…

And here’s more of it loaded in my truck…

And a closeup of the mesquite…

Here’s a closeup of the maple burl I found in the pile…

It’s the best Craig’s List score I’ve ever found! Only one problem, it’s not even close to April 1st… and I can’t wait till then to post an April Fool joke. No, I didn’t find this great looking wood in a free Craig’s List posting. (I do look several times a day in case a deal like this does come along.)

A customer who’s ordered several gunstocks visited and dropped off the wood to use for the next batch of gunstocks. I can’t decide which would look better, the quilted maple laminated with bicote or the quilted maple laminated with the zircote? The olive burl is especially fantastic! I strained a muscle moving the chunk of Texas Ebony to my wood storage room.

OMG!

The only thing I can think that could beat that deal would be,

CRAIG’S LIST HEADING-

“18 lbs 7 ounces gold taking up too much room in basement being converted to home theatre.
Pick it up and it’s yours.”

Hal, for the pain and suffering you have just caused you should send that ugly hunk of maple burl to me. If it was April 1st, I would probably forgive you!! That’s my younger sister’s birthday. Have fun with the wood.

The funniest part is that so many folks post before they read(just like me). Hey, I can take care of that nasty piece with all the (looks-like) needles sticking up in it. Don’t want you to hurt yourself. :) Great post.

The only thing that gave it away was that rifle stock in the first picture, and I was busy trying to spot the
defect that caused it to get put out on the curb. Are you going to use that Texas Ebony for highlights,
or do you have a special stock in mind for it. Thank you for sharing your bounty and causing just a little
wood envy.

Hal, remind me next time I come down to wear a bullet proof vest, just in case, somebody here don’t see the humour in this .
