Part 1: The beginning
I live in an old somewhat of a bungalow style house.It had been “updated” over the years (read in poorly remodeled” before we bought it.I have been working on it for years fixing past “updates” We enjoy the Arts & Crafts style and are trying to finish the house to the degree. Part 2: The project keeps growing
After the woodwork was finished on the doors, we decide we should remove the carpet after all. I know the old hardwood floors below are not salvageable. Walls and built ins have been moved or removed. So now it is time for hardwood floor.
Part 3: Wainscot
Next phase of the room is the wainscoting.We chose an A&C style from books we had seen. This will include a plate rail as well.We have also installed push button light switches. Of course the outlets in the room had to be changed from white to brown also. Back to the shop dimensioning lumber. After a test section was made up, it was set in place for final review. Part 4: Wainscot chapter 2
Time to get started with assembly. I chose the North wall first. Partly because it was small and I needed a small victory and also wanted to deal with the first of the cold air returns.. Pocket holes are drilled prior to assembly. I find they really tighten up the joints and hold well.Besides they are fast and accurate. . . Part 5: wainscot.........the saga continues
The next area to be undertaken is the West wall.It is the longest run in the room, just over 13’. Preparing the top rail.Fortunately I had a piece long enough to do the top rail in one piece.....Nothing works like a well tuned and sharp plane...Assembly of the frame took up most of my work area.This area also included a cold air return which had to be framed.....Cutting relief into the back of the frame work.....Plate rail and shelf glue up and assembly.....Corner detail. Part 6: The final upper wainscot sections.
I finally am finishing up the upper sections of the wainscot project.These have added some interesting twists. Most of them resulting from working on a 125 year old house. Part 7: Made and installed the last of the trim.
It has been a while but I finally finished the living room.The last of the trim has been installed. The baseboard proved to be more challenging than I had hoped for.The house over the last 100+ years has settled so every bit had to be scribed and planed to fit. There are still pieces to build for the room but at least it is finished. I plan on adding a period correct light to finish it off. thanks for looking.
