A & C Living room make over #7: Made and installed the last of the trim.

It has been a while but I finally finished the living room.
The last of the trim has been installed.

The baseboard proved to be more challenging than I had hoped for.
The house over the last 100+ years has settled so every bit had to be scribed and planed to fit.

There are still pieces to build for the room but at least it is finished.

I plan on adding a period correct light to finish it off.

thanks for looking.

Greg

Here is the finished product finally…......................about 2 years later than my wife had hoped for.

A & C Living room make over #6: The final upper wainscot sections.

I finally am finishing up the upper sections of the wainscot project.
These have added some interesting twists. Most of them resulting from working on a 125 year old house.

Here are more pictures following progress.
.
.
Building the panels in the shop.
This 12’ section is ready to have filler strips attached between the corbels.
.

.
Lots of plane work and fine tuning had to be done to make everything match up to the old house just right.
Various planes were the correct tools for the job.
.

.
Finishing before installation.
After staining, all wood gets a couple coats of shellac for an authentic finish.
.

.

.
The panels installed very well.
This corner took a bit of fine tuning but I am pleased with the outcome.
.

.
A couple more views.
.

The next phase will be to install filler strips and make the baseboards.
They will all have to be scribed to match the floor.

The base boards will be approx 5” tall with a 1/4” chamfer across the top edge.

I am trying to finish this up before we get too busy at work.

Stay tuned….........................

Huge Air Dried Walnut haul

A friend of mine contacted me a while back to inquire if I was interested in a good deal buying his walnut.

Seems he gets news that he has to move with his job and does not want to move the wood.

He had just moved it a year or so prior.

Well I am a sucker for a deal on good wood so I cannot say no.

This walnut was cut about 20 years ago.
It was stickered and air dried.
Mostly 4/4 and 5/4

Air dried walnut is the best!

Here is where we started

.
.

.
.

.
.

A couple friends helped me get all of this wood out of the loft and loaded on the truck and trailer.

.
.

.
.

After this load, we still had to go back for more.

This is some of the finest walnut I have ever seen.
Absolutely incredible color you cannot get with dried and steamed walnut.
I figure somewhere just over 3000bf
I will probably sell some of it.

I have more than a lifetime supply…...................COOL!

Greg
.
.
This project was made with from a piece of this walnut.
Only finish is clear shellac.
.
.
.

The next area to be undertaken is the West wall.
It is the longest run in the room, just over 13’.

Preparing the top rail.
Fortunately I had a piece long enough to do the top rail in one piece.
.
.

.
.
Nothing works like a well tuned and sharp plane.
.
.
Assembly of the frame took up most of my work area. This area also included a cold air return which had to be framed.
.
.

.
.
Cutting relief into the back of the frame work.
.
.

.
.
Plate rail and shelf glue up and assembly.
.
.

.
.
Corner detail. I was really happy the way the the corner turned out. It is in a very visible area.
.
.

.
.
The West wall is finished except for the base. the base will all have to be scribed to match the floor.
.
.

A & C Living room make over #4: Wainscot chapter 2

Time to get started with assembly.

I chose the North wall first.
Partly because it was small and I needed a small victory and also wanted to deal with the first of the cold air returns.
.

Pocket holes are drilled prior to assembly. I find they really tighten up the joints and hold well.
Besides they are fast and accurate.

.

.

Framing for the cold air return.
.

.

.
.
Glue up of the top rail assembly.
.
.
.

.
.

Edge detail. I clipped the corners to soften it and also to avoid a rude gash to the face in the middle of the night.
.
.

.
.
I used a block plane to soften the edges. I found this plane very useful throughout this project thus far.
.
.

.
.
North section in place. The baseboards will have to be cut around the cold air return.
.
.

.
.
While I was working in the shop, my wife installed new door hardware throughout the house.
Of course, every door had to have chisel work done on it to accept the new lock sets.
She saved me another days work by taking on this project.
.
Finally got rid of the polished brass hardware!~
.
.

A & C Living room make over #3: Wainscot

Next phase of the room is the wainscoting.
We chose an A&C style from books we had seen. This will include a plate rail as well.
We have also installed push button light switches.

Of course the outlets in the room had to be changed from white to brown also.

Back to the shop dimensioning lumber.

After a test section was made up, it was set in place for final review.

A few more adjustments and finish and then it is back to the house again.

This is just leaning in place at this point.

Additional base has to still be made.

That white door is hideous!
Looks like I see another project on the horizon.

Now that the final version has been approved it is time to start making progress in the shop.
All walls are measured and cut lists made up.
All pieces are rough cut and numbered so I can find them as needed.

A little overzealous with the planer…..........

I live in an old somewhat of a bungalow style house.
It had been “updated” over the years (read in poorly remodeled” before we bought it.
I have been working on it for years fixing past “updates”

We enjoy the Arts & Crafts style and are trying to finish the house to the degree.

I redid the living room years ago and it has served us well.
Now it is time to start adding the details we desire.

Where we were…...............

<img src="http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j248/2beast/House/DSCF0046.jpg" title="Old trim and "cute" stencils" alt="Old trim and "cute" stencils" />

I started off with a stack of rough sawn oak and a plan (also a new Powermatic jointer)

Started off by making all new trim for around the window
