Table Almost finished...this has been more fun than a monkey barrel...

I am almost finished this table. The Zebrawood top is 73”x 39” and the rails are Padauk with Zebrawood Legs. I did not want the legs to be in contact with the floor so for protection I added some of those super glide disks to the bottom after recessing them in about 1/4”.

Finishing: I initially rubbed in a coat of teak oil to highlight the grains.
The top and the legs/rails are in the process getting their 5th coat of hand rubbed varnish with an expected 10 coats altogether. My process is to sand in between each coat with 400 grit paper…progress to 600 grit after coat #8… and sand the final coat with 1200 grit and apply wax… I found it much easier to apply the finish before fastening the top…but that will only take about 5 minutes . This has been a fun project but I am anxious to get back to creating more boxes for upcoming shows.

This looks really nice. I like the sculpting you did and especially like the way you did the table ends. Gives it more character and an elegant look!

Greg, You have done it again! What a beautiful table and the wood choice knocked it out of the park ( your sculpting didn’t hurt anything either).

Thanks everyone! I really enjoy every projectI work on. One of the things that make woorworking so much fun is the many exotic woods available and their beauty that unfolds as a finish is applied to them.

The Zebrawwood was such a nice wood to use on this project, as was the Padauk…and I have used them both previously on a number of occasions that were smaller projects…but the real surprise was the appearance of the Zebrawood on a large table top as the oil and successive coats of poly were applied. Wood grains of many woods have such a rare beauty and patterns to them that make me feel like a kid in a candy store every time I go to the lumberyard.

Missed this, pieces look really good. Would enjoy seeing it assembled and in a setting? Is the client the same person who you made the bed for?
