Rockler's new Auto-Lock T-Track Clamps

Rockler's new Auto-Lock T-Track Clamps

09-18-2014 04:18 AM by timbertailor | 6 comments »

As some of you may already know, I recently built an assembly table (32” x 48”) using dual purpose track. I needed more clamps (who doesn’t?) to provide proper coverage of the large surface area and saw the new AutoLock T Track clamps in Rockler’s catalog. I watched a few product demonstration videos and decided to give them a try. What a great design. The large wheel makes tightening in position a breeze with plenty of leverage to hand tighten in position. Anoth...

Dust Collection Upgrade

Dust Collection Upgrade

02-05-2013 07:12 PM by TheDane | 20 comments »

I have wanted a two-stage dust collection system for some time, so decided to take the leap and order an Oneida Super Dust Deputy. The Super Dust Deputy (SDD) was well packed and everything (SDD, installation bolts, foam gasket, and the 5”-to-4” and 6”-to-4” reducers) was packed in a single box surrounded by plastic and foam. Because of the lid I opted for, I substituted the bolts Oneida provided with 1/4” x 20 tpi x 2 1/2” that I had on hand in the shop...

Dust Deputy / Oneida Air Systems Inc.

Dust Deputy / Oneida Air Systems Inc.

The kit comes with the plastic cyclone, two buckets, lid, hardware and hoses. The cone is made of thick polypropylene plastic with the hose connections tapered so that hoses easily fit. The dust deputy has far exceeded my expectations from when I first read about it. The $99.00 investment was well worth it. I have a central vacuum system hooked up to most of my stationary tools and this system on its roll around cart is very versatile, hooking it up to other tools and for general shop cl...

ACCIDENTAL, (DEFINITELY OFF-LABEL), SANDPAPER DISC CLEANER!

ACCIDENTAL, (DEFINITELY OFF-LABEL), SANDPAPER DISC CLEANER!

03-04-2014 11:22 PM by jeffwedekind | 8 comments »

I discovered this little gem of a use completely by accident one day. I had been sanding a lot of pine on my disc sander and the disc was completely gummed up with resin. It was shot! Or so I thought. As fate would have it, I needed to sand some finer parts, and I didn’t have another disc on hand. The closest place to get a new 12’’ disc is over 100 miles away, so I tried to figure out a way to get the disc back in action. I tried my trusty gum block, nothing. I tr...

Rudd Lacquer Sprays Well, Nice Satin Finish

Rudd Lacquer Sprays Well, Nice Satin Finish

My local paint store quit carrying Valspar Pre-cat lacquer. Their replacement product is Rudd Duracat-V 550 voc pre-cat lacquer. It is billed as a vinyl, non-yellowing lacquer. I had the chance to use it on a recent project, and it compares favorably with Valspar, Sherwin Williams, and Magnalac. This lacquer is milky white in the can, compared to the yellow color of lacquers I have used in the past. I used the satin sheen, which looked like a hand rubbed finish after one coat. I sanded ...

My Super Dust Deputy Review

My Super Dust Deputy Review

02-11-2014 02:52 AM by Garth | 2 comments »

I upgraded my shopvac & Dust Deputy to a Souped up Harbor Freight Dust Collector. With that, I got the Super Duputy. Attached are some pictures that show how much dust was collected in the bin by the cyclone and how little dust got into the bag of the dust collector. Needless to say, I think the pictures pretty much tell the story of how well it worked. More information on the system is here.

Flatmaster 24" Drum Sander

Flatmaster 24" Drum Sander

I know there are a couple of reviews on the Flatmaster Sander but I thought I would give my impressions of my new 24 inch Flatmaster. I have had this sander for about 4 months now and have run many different projects and wood types on it and it does a great job. Unlike most drum sanders, it is a hand feed sander so some will be turned off immediately but they would be missing a great sander. I purchased the ready made metal cabinet version. There are other various forms of the sander in ki...

Porter Cable 390K 5" low profile Random Orbital Sander

Porter Cable 390K 5" low profile Random Orbital Sander

First off I have used many, many different sanders before this purchase. I bought this sander to replace a porter cable 1/4 sheet finishing sander that finally gave out after many years of reliable use. I looked at several random orbital sanders that were comparable including the Dewalt version which is more of a finishing sander where this is an all around work horse. The most notable difference between this and other ROS’s is the fact this is very quiet compared to Dewalt, Black...

Brilliant!

Brilliant!

My first experience spraying Minwax Polycrylic has been outstanding: thins and sprays better than oil based poly, no flammable fumes, easy to clean up and looks great. The biggest downside: sanding! The grain is raised twofold using the water based, plan on using 220 to knock down the first bristles and 400 to finish. I’m sold.
