Finaly got shop time

Finally got some shop time this week. It’s been difficult this last month to get out. Lots of health problems in the family and my office moved to a new location – further away from home so my commute is longer.

Then I got into make this project on the scroll saw and it’s been taking longer than expected. It’s a box with a turtle shape. It’s a birthday present and just one of those deals where it would have been nice to have read ALL the magazine article on the project before starting. sigh…

I glued too many layers together at one time and cutting the main box has been a pain. The scroll saw blade like to bend on wood this think and it’s far to easy to get a concave cut. And it burnt the wood where I got impatient. Well it’s been a great learning experience and next time I’ll be better prepared.
Here are a couple of pictures of where I am on this one:

Entertainment center planning

While it’s still a bit too cold to be in the shop I decided to spend some time drawing up some plans. Recently I bought one of those fancy new LCD TVs with internet everything in it. Now I need a bigger piece of furniture to put it on. Here’s a couple of shots of the SketchUp drafts I’ve started. Big TV on top, equipment in the center, lower outside corner space for my wife’s vinyl records. Drawers upper corners for DVDs, CDs, all that old stuff.

Most of the wood in my living room is red oak so I am thinking of making this out of red oak ply with a solid wood face frame. Okay, not fine furniture but it will work in the space. More importantly I’ve got a chance of actually making something like this in a weekend.

I still need to bit of refinement on the details. So far I am happy to report that the plan has received preliminary approval from my wife.

Here’s a couple of quick shots of the plan so far.

Cold in the shop

I haven’t been in the workshop much since before Christmas. My shop is mostly unheated and we’ve had a bit of a cold snap here. It’s warmed up enough this weekend for me to get into the shop and get the final parts of this clock I am working on cut and sanded. Got everything dry fitted. Next step is to glue it together and put on some finish. Well, some parts will be finished then glued. or something like that.

Here’s a picture of what it looks like today. I’ll post better pictures when it’s completed – my wife took the photo and we were afraid to turn it to get better light on.

Christmas Gift workshop #2: Today's progress

As promised here are some pictures of things I am working on in the Christmas workshop. Mostly it is scroll saw work right now. Last summer our grandsons were visiting and I showed them one of my Scroll Saw magazines. I told them to pick what they wanted me to make for them for Christmas. One of the things picked was this stamp press model:

It’s almost done.

This is a basic band saw box but I put some marquetry on the top:

And here are some Christmas tree ornaments we’re making. I cut out the shapes an my wife painted them:

That’s it for today – all the cutting has set my tendonitis off so I’ve got to rest it up and stop typing in this computer.
More project pictures in a couple of days.

Christmas Gift workshop #1: Christmas Gift Workshop

I am in the middle of doing something I’ve wanted to do for years – make all of the Christmas gifts I give this year. There is a long list of people I’d like to give gifts too but mostly I am trying to make something for each of the grandkids (8 in all). So far I’ve completed gifts for 3 of the kids and am starting on the 4th kid gift. I’ve got about 10 adults on my list but some might end up getting a picture of what I am building them.

Mostly I am doing small things that I can cut out on the scroll saw but even that is time consuming.

Today I had a good day and completed one project and made progress on three others.

But I don’t know if my body is going to let me keep up with my plans. Today I’ve been having some tendinitis in my elbow and even with my brace I’ve had to cut back on how much I am doing at the scroll saw.

Well, I have had this before and know the drill – rest, brace, ice and some advil. I know if I called the doctor she’d just say, “Rest is the best thing.” But I can’t rest it – I’ve got gifts to make.

sigh…

Well in my next post I’ll have some project pictures.

Advent Calendar

Here’s a couple of pictures of the Advent Calendar’s my wife and I are making – we have three in progress. The calendar is made out of 1/4 plywood that I cut on the scroll saw. My wife painted the scene on the front. Behind the doors are little boxes to hold the little gifts. Not great woodworking but a fun project:

Here is the last one to be painted. I still need to make the doors on this one:

Went to the marquetry club meeting

Now I guess I can say I am fully back in the shop. Today I spent all day with the folks at our marquetry club. I got most of the work done on a bandsaw box that I now need to do a bit of marquetry on the top for.

It was good to get out in to the shop and get my hands on some power tools.

The only disappointment was the battery in my wife’s camera died so she didn’t get all the pictures she wanted of the process. Guess I’ll just have to build another one…

Life’s tough sometimes. ;)

Serving Tray #1: Ready for the sides

Now that I’ve finished a few other projects and the doctor has cleared me to start working again, I am back on my serving tray project. I finished sanding two marquetry pieces I made a few months ago and put a seal coat of shellac on the pieces. The next step is working on the side pieces.

Today I did some trimming of the side pieces on the table saw and tomorrow I need to set the router table to refine the rabbets for the bottom pieces.

Here is a picture of one of the bottom pieces. Next blog entry will have a picture of the sides.
