I am wanting to buy a midi lathe – would certainly consider used equipment in good condition – also not sure what make would be recommended. I want to make turned pieces (finials) and door decorations for regulator wall clocks. Would appreciate any advice regarding machines you think are the best – and what are the chances of finding good used lathes. Thanks

Bob C.

I have a Jet 1220vs lathe which is a 3/4 motor. I like it but it cost over $500. It has a 12 inch swing, which means that I can turn something close to 12 inches in diameter. Delta, PSI, Oneway, General, Jet, all have very nice midi lathes. I looked for a long time and didn’t really see many “midi” lathes for sale that was used. Everyone has a different opinion on who is the best.

PSI has a new one out at

Rikon has a new midi lathe that you can see at: **
Top of the line lathe is a Oneway:

There is a lot of information here on Lumberjocks also. Take your time, the cost of owning a midi lathe is enough that you need to really think it out. Watch for sales that is one of the reasons that I bought my Jet, 20% off and free shipping from Rockler in December 2009.

I have the PSI Midi lathe, and have loved using it over the past year… You can see my review of it here

As far as finding a good used one, you should try Craigslist. I have found quite a few good deals there.
