I’m sure many of you have read the book or seen the movie ”The Davinci Code”. I have done both as well, but before I decided to get myself more seriously into my woodworking. Well not long ago I purchased the book on tape and was listening to it in my car on the way into work (45 min one way), and while I was listening to it they were talking about the Cryptex and I got a bug in my head that I wanted to build one out of wood. So I went to the art store and retooled some drafting equipment that I would need and set out to drawing out my next project (probably alot more difficult than I should be attempting, but I like it that way..LOL)

So here I am my drawing is basically complete I just have to enter in the measurements and it is done, I will probably finish it this weekend. Now the fun part begins in trying to translate the drawing into my wood. This will be a real test. I am hoping to have a working prototype done within the next 2 months. I am going to do the first one out of whatever cheap wood I can find just so I can get the feel of the project and then I will create a much nicer one out of some better wood.

I am trying to do all of this before October, for my best friends birthday so that I can give it to him as a present just to TORMENT him. (some friend I am hahaha) I will give him clues as to what the code is (OLDFART) and he will have to figure it out on his own.

The nice thing about my design is that you will be able to change the code on the cryptex so that you can use it more than once and not have to use the same code. I’m pretty impressed with myself on this one, I spent quite a few nights with my eraser in hand working this puzzle out in my head before even thinking about transferring this to wood. It was alot fun just doing the drawing. I can’t wait to start on making it out of wood. I will post some pics as I go along.

I’ve been pondering one of these for years now…. Guess what is on the cover of Scroll Saw magazine this month – just hit the newstand today. Yours does sound more elaborate (in a good way)

Can’t wait to see how it comes out. I made a great puzzle box for my wife one christmas, and am anxious to take that to the next level.
