Finishing Wax
For years I have been using a wax as the last coat over my finish and never really thought about brand until I made some tests. First let me say I have used just about every over-the-counter paste wax known to the retail marrket: Johnson Paste Wax, Butcher’s, Minwax, Liberon, Renaissance, BriWax, etc, etc. All seemed to do the job but while finishing a project for my wife, I decided to do a little test to see which one gave the highest sheen after steel wooling the finished varnish. I ...
Outstanding countersink/bit combination
Over the years I’ve tried a number of countersink + drill bit brands, most use a replaceable bit but they are all pretty mediocre and few lasted a year. I’ve owned this Dewalt set for several years and they still perform like the first day I brought them home. Some folks believe combination bits are gimmicky, preferring to use separate products but these might change their mind. Not only do the countersinks perform flawlessly, the tapered bits are exceptional and probably the best...
Great product
I have never felt compelled to write a review for a product before but I am very happy to have tried this product and extreemly pleased with the results. I ordered online from the odies oil website. The following day I received a phone call from the owner who wanted to thank me for my order and find out how I heard about his product. couple days later the product arrived packed very nicely. I applied this finish to a walnut slab that i sanded to 400grit. I tried a few method to see what...
Sideways Cutting
I’ve never been much for batoning. All that hewing and froeing, to what end? Odd shaped chunks of wood for rustic furniture or homemade shingles? Turning blanks? Exotic construction? Not my bag; I’d rather split infinitives. What I do like is having specialty tools that go where others can’t and then do the impossible. Like these very tiny planes. They are are a set of two (L&R handed) side cutting chisels available from Lee Valley under the Chestnut...
A clamp like no other.
It is a very old saw that one cannot have too many regular clamps. At work for instance I run about 40 of the Jorgensen 3700 series and still wish I had more at times. Yet it is the specialty clamps that we have that sometimes get you out of a jamb or simply make life a whole lot easier. To that end I have spring clamps, band clamps, little tiny C-clamps and a host of others that step up only when that seems the way to work. I’m sure you all have them too. One of my specialty tool...
Craftsman 12" bandsaw
Hello fellow lumber jocks! Scored a Craftsman 12” bandsaw and mobile base this weekend off of CL. $50 for the saw and $10 for the base plus the owner still had the original manual. When I went to check it out it had been sitting in a basement unused for at least a year. It had the usual crud buildup on the table from sitting there but I could see that there were only a few spots of rust on the table itself. Plugged it in and it fired right up and made a nice straight cut with no bl...
Great for paint
Let me start out by saying that I am pretty new to spray finishes of any kind. I recently built some MDF shelves and got about half way through the first coat of primer on the first shelf when I remembered how much I hate painting. So I tried to get the wife to do it, then when I realized that wasn’t going to happen I set about finding a faster/easier method. I have an Earlex HVLP system, but from the 1 or 2 times I’ve tried to use it to spray paint I’ve found the proce...
Howards Butcher Block Conditioner :Nice satin finish on cutting boards
I was impressed with this product after applying it to some cutting boards recently. In the past I have used mineral oil, which leaves an oily finish that never seems to dry. The Butcher Block Conditioner is a mix of mineral oil and natural waxes, so it dries to a smooth satin finish after 20 minutes. A quick wipe-down and the wood feels great. Available at Home Depot. I think it is worth a try.
Finally can breathe safely!
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Z53WKU/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i02 After trying a few masks, this one is definitely the best so far. I rarely give 5 stars, and in fact this is my first 5 star item that I have used. Its comfortable, inexpensive, and has a down firing exhaust that prevents any condensation on safety glasses. The adjustments for the straps are easy and it has the best detachment mechanism so you aren’t wearing out the adjustments. Cost: ~$20 I am using the ...
