I'm a 30 year old amateur woodworker. I've always lived in apartments and condos and never had access to a shop of my own. However I grew up in the theatre shops of my high school, college, and eventually a university where I served as the technical director for the theatre department. In that position I was in charge of all the lumber ordering, builds of sets, etc. Looking back I didn't know how great I had it, with such a spacious shop! Mostly I was picking stuff up as I went, and drawing on the little bit of formal training I got in my undergrad. Which essentially meant I was great at building things that look good from 25-50 feet away and will stay together (not kill anyone) for about a month.
The fine woodworking stuff didn't come up for me until I moved to my new house with a two car garage, that I quickly have converted into a workshop. Still learning on my own by researching online, reading wood magazine, and now, hopefully, learning from you all at LJ.
Hope to meet you sometime.
