I'm a (former) software engineer and (current) practicing lawyer. I have no aptitude for woodworking or any other undertaking that involves mechanical competency. Because my career choices have always involved intangible products, I have long desired a hobby in which I build things that I can touch and see. My grandfather was an amateur woodworker, and there is just something enchanting about the smell of freshly sawed wood and the satisfaction of working with your hands. So, I'm trying to get into woodworking and carpentry. We'll see how that goes. Maybe my first project should be a gavel... or the scales of justice? Or maybe something easy like a birdhouse.

Welcome to Lumberjocks. The projects are an inspiration, the information is priceless and the people are supportive. The only problem is, the site can get addictive.
God Bless

Welcome to LumberJocks. Glad to have you aboard. †
Your first project could be just a board. Sand it smooth and put on a great finish. It could become the base for the gavel later.
