Lousy Week

The whole week has been a real bummer. Simple little things all adding up to make this past week one to forget, like….the cat got up on the bench and knocked over a pint of black dye….all over some curly maple. I walked between two benches not remembering the fan cord and the fan hit the floor bending the cage. A chicken got into the shop and pooped on 4 pieces of QS Oak. Our oldest mare, the real pet of them all had to be put down yesterday…bummer
I went to the shop to get my mind off the mare. While doing some mundane work, I noticed 3 pieces I cut were exactly backwards from what they need to be. As I was sitting there, wondering just how I could have done such a stupid thing, I looked up and saw this…..

Is that thing grinning at me or am I just imagining things?????

That dang podium

I just completed a course in the Rand school of technology to learn how to put pictures in a blog. Thanks Rand!!
I dont want to bore anyone with the general build. It’s pretty much standard. What I thought I would show is the way I did the pin that holds the top at different levels.
What I have seen in the past was a pin that gets stuck in a hole. But usually, the top and the pin wiggle. So, I decided to do it a little differently.
First is to drill a 3/4” hole in the podium

After the hole is drilled in the main post, I slid the inner post in and drilled holes in the front. These holes were 3/4” also. When these holes were drilled, I switched to a 5/8” bit to drill the back hole.

These holes have to be 5/6” because the peg to be threaded is 3/4” so the threaded whole has to smart smaller.
Next is to thread the holes in the back side of the inner post. That has to be done thru the front hole to be certain it aligns correctly

The 3/4” dowel has to be threaded as well. I have a Beall threader and boy does it make the job easy

Make the peg

Then a little test

The knob needs a little shape. But, when it’s in, it’s tight. No wiggles

A few months, Odie made a post about getting hurt because he wasn’t keeping his mind on what he was doing. Well…...

stuff happens when you don’t pay attention.

especially when you are thinking about what you are going to do instead of what you’re doing.

And typing with one hand is no fun

Shop

This is what I woke up to yesterday

.
Here was the next thing I saw

This was next in my sight
.

Things have not been going all that well. First I had a water pipe burst next to the house. It took forever to fix it because it was never above 19F that day. Keeping the pipe and glue as a warm temp so the glue would work was real fun. That night, a pipe burst in the shop

Probably a little hard to see but, the vertical pipe blew off the horizontal pipe on the floor and, the horizontal pipe is shattered. The same pipe outside is fine. At least it didn’t spray. But it put a solid blanket of water on the floor. Took two of us quite some time to get it cleaned up. The only thing it got to was the bottom of a pattern file I was working on.

I got it lifted up and on the chunk of roofing insulation. Water had gotten into the sides that I had just built. So, after getting the water out and the floor almost dry, I thought I would finally take some pictures of the mess I call a shop.
The primary lumber storage. Bottom is all pine, cedar, cypress and sycamore. Top is Cherry, Maple, Paduk, Babinga and lots of QSWO.

The primary source of heat. Works well but, temps in the low teens and no insulation makes for not much heat advantage from this thing. By the way, if I had finished the insulation on the roof (cool-seal) I wouldn’t have had the rust problem.

This is the pattern file. I had to replace the sides that were rotted. Then gave it a bath in lye to make the new wood match the old. Next will be the dye then finish. Looking forward to getting this thing out of the shop. It’s just too tempting to my little helper. He loves to put things in the drawers

Somewhere in this area is the miter saw. I know it’s there somewhere….

Thats the bench that still needs to be finished…showing my handy rope drawer pulls. The drawer on the floor is out of the bench so I could remove a packrat nest. Not sure why he thought he could build a nest in my drawer but, he did. I cought him and took him to a much better place for him to live.

The table is a makeup table from a beauty shop from back in the 50’s. The rocker is the chair my mother rocked me in. Someone mentioned projects getting set aside….hmmm

The helper helping

This is where the bathroom will be…also the site of the water pipe explosion

This is the problem with finishing the project. I haven’t been able – since the end of October – to get the septic finished. Soon as I pump the water out, it rains.

Another poacher in the shop is my wife’s “greenhouse”. She keeps all her outside plants in there for the winter. It takes up way too much room but, gotta save those plants…..

Grandsons rides. He tells me which one he wants to ride on to go get the mail….naaa he ain’t spoiled…

That chunck of land just past the fence is what I gave my daughter and son-in-law to build their house on. It starts in the spring. Another reason I’m in hurry for spring. They are all (5) living in my house. Four adults, three kids, three dogs and two cats…..
So,after I got the leaks fixed, by the way, I had another out at the horse pen, I started having electrical problems in the house. I gave up and called an electrition friend. Now, if it would just warm up so I could get back to the shop….
