Hey Gang,
I made this planer knife sharpening jig a while back, but recently modified it to make it cooler! :^)
I added a wheel and a better bevel angle adjuster.
Let me know what you think. It’s good for general sharpening, but if your blade has large nicks, I’d suggest using a different method.
Cheers
Brian

Very cool jig Brian.
I can’t sharpen my planer blades but I like the jig design.
When I sharpen the blades for hand planes planes I use a similar technique but I use a 6” wide roll of adhesive backed sandpaper. If you wanted to do that you could have a little longer travel (6”)... although what you have works great for a 12” blade so in your case there is no problem to solve.
Thanks for sharing.

Brian, your timing is excellent.
I have recently started thinking of how to sharpen my knives as they need attention soon, and there is no sharpening service within 3 hours drive of us.
Thanks.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback!
I should add one minor detail to the construction if you plan on making one. In order to position the two brads which serve as stops for the knives, use a marking gauge to scribe a line down the length of the jig (distance to the front of the jig depends on the width of your knives). Place the small brads in the groove of the scribe line and nail them in with a tack hammer. This way they are both positioned the same distance from the front of the jig and your knives will be positioned correctly.
