OK, so I joined the local woodworking club recently, & started my first project.

I am working on – what I call a butter box.
150×100x75 Maple box, with splines of ancient manuka (10,000 year old).

The box is now glued up, the top routered for the lid, & the lid fits the box, but still needs a lot of sanding to dome it to my expectations.

I can not wait to see it finished !!!!
Next is to add the splines (three to each corner), before tapering the sides.
Also need to attack the lid & dome it – boy, it is going to be a challenge to get it right.
and then…
to top it off, I need to turn / carve a knob for the lid.
Hmmmm… time to trawl my favourite website for ideas….
Lumberjocks is addictive !!!!

I agree with Don. It would be interesting to follow your progress on the box.

Hi fellow LJ’s,
Thanks for the support.
So, Don insist on a peek pre-view, so I hauled out the camera…

So this is the Butterbox. It’s got a nice red line running right around it.
Next step will be to add the ancient manuka (in foreground) splines (3 per corner as per pencil marks).
At this stage, it’s still square, but the top rim still needs to be cut at a slight angle, same applies for the sides. The lid needs to be domed, as I don’t like the flat (dumb) look – still need to figure out how I am going to do that !
The lid handle is something I’m not bothered with right now, but thinking of using the ancient manuka again.
Also toying with:
(a) adding ancient manuka on the inside lip (recess) to ‘frame’ the hole – if that makes sense. ; &
(b) add a inlay script on the underside of the lid.
Hope I’m not biting off more than I can chew…
Decisions, decisions !!!!!!
