A Day in the life of a Shop Foreman

Greetings all!

I received a nice note from Barb asking “How was I? Where was I?” – so I thought I would give an update here.

Last year I closed the doors of Hometown Woodworking and got a job as the Shop Foreman for Chestnut Bay Cabinets – www.chestnutbaycabinets.com. A custom cabinet shop in Falmouth, MA. (check out the blog on the site, there are more pictures and stories there).

What’s my day like? Well, I am fortunate enough to be part of a great team. I have a full time finisher, 2 full time caibnetmakers, a student who works with me from the local coop program. I have a designer and a huge workshop of equipment.

We program all projects from design to manufacturing on Cabinetvision. We have a CNC which cuts all our casegoods (having one of these is pretty incredible). We build everything. A bulk of our work is kitchens, but we do lots of vanities and built-ins as well as a little home office.

I spread myself through all aspects of the business, I work directly with our clients, manage design, schedule production, all materials ordering, work in the shop and go on most deliveries myself. This gives a continuous feel to the client from beginning to end and makes me a very busy girl! As a team, we are all dedicated to a quality product. As a manager, meeting expectations and guaranteeing delivery times our my promise. Our primary clients are architects, builders and contractors and their clients.

I will attach some pictures. Just as an FYI, we are looking to hire a salesperson. So if you know anyone in Massachusetts looking for a job. Please send them my way!

Feel free to call me when you are in the area, I would be happy to give you the tour!

As a side note: 10 years ago when I started in this business, I could never have imagined the places it would take me. So be true to yourself; dreams do come true!

Gail

Here is a great project for any dining room. A cherry buffet, 10 feet long and 9 feet tall. The finish is waterlox. There is a lot of money for lumber in this project. The wine racks can be removed and replaced with a shelf should the client decide. Enjoy! Next year, they are going to buy the table!

You will see the similarities in design. The wood is quarter sawn white oak hardwood and the counter is QSWO ply – the cases and panels are WO – the finish is Red Mahogany and Waterlox. Thanks for the inspiration Hudson!
