I found a 24” boxwood folding ruler on eBay for $3. It was nice, I liked it but it didn’t feel accurate.

I found another one but this time a #62 with brass edges. I paid $13. When it came in, it was so worn down the numbers were barely legible.

Then I found this guy:

I paid $9 on eBay.

It was pretty dirty. I had read Chris Schwarz’s blog about this ruler, and he mentioned oxalic acid as a way to clean it up. I looked around and didn’t have any of that on hand, but I did have Comet Cleanser.

I used some Comet, and Brasso on the brass, and a few coats of paste wax and now this beauty sits in my pocket anytime I get to be in my shop.

Its only missing 1 of the 3 alignment pins.

I wanted some patina to stay on it, because I like the idea that its much older than I am. They just don’t make them like they used to.

Comet cleanser is extremely abrasive.

You’ll have much better luck with a damp Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Pad.

It won’t polish the brass, but it won’t degrade it’s collectible value either.

Have your say...
