I use my Lie-Nielson Adjustable Mouth Block Plane almost daily in my custom fly fishing net building. I actually have a few pics of my plane on my website (www.sierra-nets.com) It is a beautifully crafted tool and makes minced meat out of wood.
A while back, I noticed I was having some difficulty adjusting the blade tightening screw, known as a “spinwheel”. When I last took the plane apart for sharpening, I noticed that the brass screw on the “spinwheel” was bent. I tried fixing it but could not get it straight and was having problems fully retracting the screw bak up into the bronze cap iron.
I highlighted the spinwheel for reference in the picture below. (obtained from the Lie-Nielson site)
To help others who use or will use this wonderful plane in teh future, I can offer some advice:
Don’t overtighten this spinwheel. It is relatively easy to do. Do not drop your plane as this too can bend the brass screw. Apparently, I did both at some point. However, a quick phone call to Lie-Nielson, and Andrew, the rep who answered the phone, offered to send me a new one free of charge!
Is this a dream company or what!? I will never buy another brand…ever.

It’s called customer service! A scarce commodity these days. Agree their tools are great.

They “saved” hand tools from disappearing. Now they are “saving” good business practices.
Many of their tools are on my list.

you get what you pay for. and you pre-paid for that customer service when you bought that plane.
the good thing is that company like this are keeping their part of the bargain by providing you with that CS when needed. always nice to see.

I bought a LN 102 plane, used, that had a bent depth-adjustment screw. I called them and they sent me a new one, no questions asked. Great customer service!

“I’ll never buy another brand.”
That explains why they do it.
