My interest in woodworking dates back to the late 50's. As a small child I spent many hours watching my grandfather build amazing things from scrap wood and a handful of hand tools. In high school I continued with woodshop and after a short vacation in the army, took a job in the shipping department of an electronics company. There I was able to take the cut-off from the crates and pallets I built home. Believe it or not, they used number 1 select pine for their crates. I used this "scrap" to make all sorts of small projects. I even was able to start my own frame shop. As my knowledge grew I exspanded my business and word of mouth was my advertising. My, how the world has changed. This was all before the days of personal computers and the internet. Woodworking has improved dramatically in this time with larger machinery and improved tooling being made available to the average garage shop owner. The though of being able to have an online community of woodworkers was strictly science fiction when I began. Now, it's almost essential.
Today My shop is larger, my tool and machine inventory has grown and I now work with my son. We build, of course, kitchen cabinets but also enjoy the unique projects that come our way, such as tables, chairs, and custom gun cabinets. Soon my own grandchildren will be old enough to watch their grandpa take what seems like very simple tools and machines and build beautiful cabinets and furniture. I wonder how he will be inspired by me.
