Will this be strong enough? - 13 replies
My kids are interested in setting up an aquarium so I bought a ‘Starter Kit’ 29 gallon aquarium. I figure that is going to be about 300 pounds of water plus substrate and gear. We are putting this in the rec room in the basement and I want to make sure that the base is strong enough. I’ve seen torsion boxes talked about here...

Lathe components? - 16 replies
A while back I had a bit of a tool gloat about a very old hobbyist lathe that I got at a very good price http://lumberjocks.com/topics/52338 . Now I’ve only ever seen a lathe operating once but I have read about and watched YouTube videos so I have a pretty good idea of how much I don’t know :-) What I am wondering, and it seems as...

A maybe tool gloat:-) - 6 replies
Earlier today I took a bit of time off to tour around the country side and check out a “large garage sale”. Now I normally have no patience for garage sales but this one had the eye catching words like ‘lathe’ and ‘lots of hand tools’. The sale was in Rivers, Mb which is about 45 minutes away. It was a sa...

Which boat to build? - 51 replies
I was going to just private message shipwright directly but then I thought it would be interesting what other Jocks would have to say… Paul, I’ve just reread your blog “The Smaug blog” and looking at many of your other projects and really appreciate the wealth of information you’ve shared. I am hopeful that I ...

Calibrating a moisture meter? - 1 reply
Having received a moisture meter for Christmas I was wondering if there is a way to validate the readings it is giving? My first thought was to take a piece of wood measure the moisture content with the meter then weigh it (I have a pretty good balance here so I think I can get a good measure of the mass) then microwave the sample until it is...

You know there are evenings when you should just put the tools down go into the house grab a favourite cool beverage and turn on the idiot box and melt your brain even further…today was one of those evenings. I’ve not been out in the shop much so when I had some time this evening I wanted to make the best of it and ‘GET A LOT ...

Persistant postings? - 6 replies
Hello Martin, This is by no means an urgent issue but one of the persistant postings is occurring again. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/51678 There are no new postings on it and it just keeps sitting in the list of unread postings (I use the Pulse feature to read LJs). I just thought I’d let you know in case it is a sign of a larg...

Latest FWW article on why pen and paper is better? - 16 replies
I just had a chance to read part of the latest FWW where there is an article about why pen and paper are better that computer programs for drawing up your projects. I’ll leave aside that the article didn’t really compare the two methods but was just a description of the steps involved in manual drafting. Don’t get me wrong I ...

I’m not even sure why I tried to send a posting to Facebook as I know it hasn’t ever worked for me (I don’t need this functionality so I’m not overly concerned) but when I do attempt posting a forum topic to facebook by using the check box on the posting page I get this error… Supplied template data does not cove...

Jenn and I bought one of the above mentioned staplers 2 years ago to put in the hardwood in our main floor. It isnt’ a large house (~1100 sq ft) and of course exclude the kitchen and bathroom so the actual area is even smaller that has hardwood. So we have been putting in the hardwood as time and budget allow are in the final stretch, my ...

Odd behavior from the Pulse button - 6 replies
It is probably something I am doing but I have noticed the last several days that this one project http://lumberjocks.com/projects/48366 doesn’t seem to disappear like the others do once they are read. This has happened with one other project about a week ago, but I can click on 48366 read it and move on to the next post and 48366 still s...

Spindle advice/education? - 1 reply
I have just purchased the Grizzly mortising attachment for my drill press. I am very excited about using this but I have a problem. The Morse Taper 4 spindle on my drill press is about 2 inches too long. The chuck I have is also just shy of three inches in diameter (OD) so doesn’t quite fit through the base of the mortising attachment (...

Hello All, I’ve read through review after review, thought about what I will be doing with it and now find myself in a (as my son Paul would say) a ‘pickle’. I have saved up my pennies and will be buying a table saw (probably tomorrow if I can figure out which one)! I’ve narrowed it down to 5 (is that really narrowing ...

Saw Stop technology and cold weather? - 7 replies
Hello all, I am seriously looking to replace my TS with something a lot more robust and have been considering General, Grizzly and Sawstop (SS). My question is for the folks who actually own one and have it in an unheated garage and get weather in the -40C range like we’ve had here the first part of this week (its -6 now…go figur...

Hello All, I know this topic was covered here already and I will continue looking for it but so far haven’t been able to find a solution. The situation is that the out feed table on my Delta jointer droops about 13/100ths of an inch so I am unable to properly joint my boards. I tried to adjust the gibs and was able to lift the table...

10 years and she still wants to keep me around!!! - 11 replies
Many of us LJ’s acknowledge how fortunate we are to have the spouses we do…that was confirmed to me again today that I am blessed with a woman that loves me, and wants me to keep hanging around doing whatever it is I do. Jen and I went on our first date 10 years ago today…I asked her to marry me at the end of that date… ...

Hey tips from LJs really work! - 17 replies
A1Jim was wondering if advice given is ever really used by some of us newer woodworkers, I am here to confirm that yes indeed some of us actually use the tips and are incredibly grateful for the more experience folks who share their wisdom and experience with us! I am slowly bumbling my way through making some cabinets (an painfully long and ...
