I grew up on a small family farm, I'm the fourth generation. Other farms got bigger, a thousand acres or more, this farm stayed the original ~60 acres. It used to be, that was enough to make a living. Not anymore, at least, not with growing crops. So, the farm became a forest.

Now I live in a forest, surrounded with trees that basically planted themselves and grew on their own. There's a lot of wood out there, and I hope to make use of it. It will remain a forest no matter what I do, though.

I wound up learning basic woodworking because there wasn't another option. Wife and babies, living in a decrepit mansion we bought on the cheap, half of everything needed to be fixed. That meant, lots of pine or recycled lumber, and cheap labor, which was me.

I found out that I really enjoyed that work. But I had to move on and make a living, and I did. Now the kids are grown, I've returned to the family farm, and it's time to do something else.

It's quite an experience making things from wood, where you start with making your own lumber. Harvesting is the easy part. Drying is something else. Re-sawing and shaping hardwoods demand far more than working with pine.

I'm learning as fast as I can.
