Building a New Wood Shop #6: Sticks Going Up & then Ike Arrives

« Part 5: Progress? Part 6 of Building a New Wood Shop series Part 7: They're Raising the Roof! »

Last Friday there was forward progress on the new wood shop. You can see that the trusses were moved into the shop area before building the walls. The work is good & the 10 foot high walls sure look nice.

And you can see… I am keeping the wife happy by quickly working on the area of the lawn that I destroyed to get the fill dirt. That’s all the sod that I’m putting down. The rest will be seeded & covered with straw.

And then along came Ike! The hurricane that was Ike came ashore in Texas & was reduced to a Tropical Storm. If you were watching the radar on the Weather Channel, you noticed that the eye of the storm came all the way up, over & past St.Louis. Naturally the carpenters cut off the gable end off of the roof where the new shop joins up. There was a crack left open & the ceiling in both of the bedrooms on that end of the house had water leaks. The weather man said there were gusts of wind of up to 50 or 55 mph. The walls shook a bit but the wind didn’t seem to be that strong here & all we got was about 3 to 4 inches of rain in about 24 hours. There was lots of flooding around town & about 60,000 people out of power at one time or another this past weekend.

They were working Monday & Tuesday… So there’s More to Come!

Very exciting to see the progress in the work. Thank God that no major damage was done due to the hurricane.

Looking good Frank.
If you haven’t yet check out the Roxul insulation. It’s really dense and will help with the noise.

That was a nasty few hours we had here in STL, huh? WE, you and I are in the area where 4.5” fell so I feel your pain. I lucked out with just a flooded basement (for the second time in 4 days), but you got it a lot worse.

The shop is coming along just fine.

Yes, I feel fortunate that I only had a little water on the ceiling. There were a lot more people in our area that were less fortunate. I was called to work on Sunday at 11am to help with repairs where I work…. I got off at 9am Monday. It’s only Wednesday nite & I already worked 24 hours overtime this week. We have lots of workers laboring to get the customer’s power back on here in the St.Louis area.

There’s another shop episode coming…. Stay tuned!
