Finish for plywood beach toy? - 4 replies
I’m going to make some sand combs for some two year olds. Like these, more or less. I’m a finishing novice. Does anyone have suggestions for a finish that would achieve the following? The material will probably be 1/4” plywood. 1) Not sticky or tacky when applied to plywood by a novice 2) Gives a small/reasonabl...

Estate sale lumber - what is it? - 31 replies
I bought these two boards on Sunday at an estate sale…does anyone recognize the species? (They’re showing up huge; if you right click the images and view them separately you can get the whole width)

Table saw blades (sawstop, if it matters) - 27 replies
I want to take better care of my tablesaw blades. Until now I was actually using the stock one that came with my sawstop but I managed to trash it on plywood and laminate, so I have switched to a Freud blade that I bought at the same time as the saw. Lovely, cuts like butter. But it’s still my only blade. I imagine I should branch ou...

How to drill holes in rubber balls? - 32 replies
I have some dowels and small rubber balls that are destined to become drumsticks for my son. Does anyone have suggestions for a safe way to drill a hole about halfway through the center of a small rubber ball?

Dados for dummies: how to choose a set - 27 replies
I think it’s time to get into dados. I want to make boxes and box joints and I have learned how to make a jig for that but it looks like it’ll be a lot easier if I get a dado set. I have a Sawstop (yeah, yeah) so I will also have to get the new brake ($90) and lock down insert ($40). As you might guess I don’t want to spend...

I want to get into making tone boxes aka tongue drums. I have a scroll saw but I see that a lot of people make the solid boxes and then cut the tongues out of the tops using a jigsaw. (Apparently the sound of the tones will change if you try to tune them off the box and then attach it after cutting.) I don’t have a jig saw. I wonder ...

What bug is this in my wood? - 21 replies
I just got out to the shop for the first time in at least a month. I have some housekeeping projects to do, so one of the first things I did was pick up a dry chunk of log that has been sitting near the garage door for, oh, over a year, with the intent of moving it farther into the shop. It had been standing on its end. I picked it up, and ...

Tell me about Kreg Pocket Hole Jiggery - 46 replies
I’ve heard of Kreg for a long time but know nothing about them. I also have no experience with cabinetry and very little with building furniture – just an entryway bench once in a class. I now want to make a Helping Tower for my son in the kitchen. I was reading one of many sites with DIY plans and it mentioned using a Kreg pock...

Gate across garage door? - 22 replies
EDIT – problem solved! See update post downthread. OK, this is a tricky one. My shop is in a detached garage. I think the door is about 10 feet across, though I’ll have to check. The garage sits facing a paved area next to our house, which has become our son’s play area. He is one year old. Here’s a photo of ...

Pics are kind of small. This has turned up on CL today. Any ideas whether it would be hardwood or not? Maybe maple?

Teach me your finishing tricks: bandsaw boxes - 17 replies
I’m making some bandsaw boxes out of western red cedar. Obviously there’s a lot of end grain involved. I’m new to bandsaw boxes and to finishing in general. I have put on two coats of Danish oil but the end grain is still looking dry and patchy. Also, the glue lines (I used Titebond) are pretty obvious, but this seems to be...

How do I determine sufficient dust suction? - 14 replies
I have a mix of metal ducting and plastic dust hose in my shop. I have a Laguna 2HP dust collected with a 6” inlet, and the ducting goes to 4” before running to my bandsaw. The bandsaw is the closest machine to the collector on the system. Here’s a slightly old photo showing the basic setup: I have also added a wye ...

Chinese Plywood - a photo study - 8 replies
Just had to share a few photos of the box that my Made-in-China Rikon bandsaw came in this weekend: I would have loved to have seen the original piece of wood! I guess there’s more demand for shipping containers than for woodworking lumber over there.

Can you ID this wood? Some kind of pine? - 12 replies
I’m terrible at IDing wood. A house a few streets away is offering this for free. I’m not sure it’s worth taking, as it’s getting rained on today and left some kind of sticky resin on my hands when I lifted a piece yesterday. Does anyone know what it is? (I’m in western Oregon.)

220V question: sharing an outlet - 51 replies
Question for you electricians out there. I have four 220v outlets in my shop – one came with it when I got the shop and the other three were put in by an electrician last year. All are being used by machines right now – table saw, 14” bandsaw, jointer and dust collection. The plugs for the table saw and bandsaw are located...

I just got the carter ratchet rod to replace the stock tensioner on my 14” Grizzly bandsaw. I’m sad to lose the quick-release tension function but I was having a lot of trouble with the original rod. In installing the rod I noticed that without the buffer of the quick release assembly, the bottom of the new rod is resting directl...

I’m planning on adding a larger bandsaw to my shop in the medium term. I’d like to do it now but I had told myself I would wait another year or two for various family reasons. Either way, I will be using savings to buy it, and I am unlikely to gain any more savings between now and then. I’ve got several Grizzly tools and fig...

Has anyone got a surplus copy of American Woodwork #81? I mostly want it for this plan: http://americanwoodworker.com/blogs/shop/archive/2011/12/22/ws-bandsaw-table-system.aspx ...but the other articles look interesting too.
