Turn short thick logs into useful lumber at home

Turn short thick logs into useful lumber at home

I have been eying this bandsaw log mill for a couple of years now, and decided to use some Christmas money to finally get one. I got to play with it over the last couple of evenings, working with a piece of maple that I got off of Craigslist last year for free. It was green when I got it but has been drying in my shop and is now at about 12% moisture. Assembly of the mill is pretty straightforward. It’s HEAVY so make sure you have a large clear spot on your work surface. The most...

Originally happy with purchase; unit died after 18 months.

I live in humid western Oregon, and my shop has been pretty sealed off for most of the winter. I also obtained a load of green western red cedar at the start of winter which is stickered for drying. These two facts together led me to feel that a dehumidifier might be a good investment for my shop. After researching reviews on the different models out there, I decided on the rectangular 45 pint model by Soleusair. I chose this one because of a number of features: Timer mode, to shut i...

Sturdy lumber rack is easy to install

Right now this Rockler product (item 39227) is on sale for $20, normally $30, and as I’ve had my eye on it for a little while I decided to go for it and ordered three sets shortly before Christmas. I installed and loaded up all three sets within two hours this morning and am very pleased at the quality of the product. Each set includes two 24” tracks, six 14” shelf brackets and six screws. With my new magnetic studfinder (also reviewed recently) it was a piece of cake t...

Fantastic and easy to use

Fantastic and easy to use

I’ve always struggled to find the studs in my drywalled shop. I’ve got a Little Wizard metal wand and an electronic stud finder but despite my best efforts it always seemed like my first pilot hole would miss the stud entirely – especially when working on the ceiling. I got this stud finder yesterday and my whole attitude toward mounting things on the walls has changed. While showing the new studfinder to my husband in the kitchen I casually brushed it against the wall ...

Great value for the money

Great value for the money

This drill press costs $299 at Lowes and that seems to be a stable price, as I got it this summer but it’s still listed at that price. However, Lowe’s recognizes the 20% off Harbor Freight coupon so I paid less than that. This drill press has served me very well so far. You’ll need two people to lift the very heavy headstock into place. I haven’t had any vibration issues. The table adjustments are easy though it does tend to slip a bit when you tighten down the ...

Nail Puller gets great reviews but I couldn't make it live up to expectations

Nail Puller gets great reviews but I couldn't make it live up to expectations

I recently got a bunch of reclaimed wood which used to be a boat frame. At either end of most pieces are lots of nails, and I mean LOTS – about 20-30 in each piece. I wanted to try to reclaim all the wood so I looked around for a way to get these nails out, and found many good reviews of the Crescent 56 Nail Puller on Amazon. Nearly all the reviews said that this was the tool to get if you have to pull lots of nails, and described its use. It seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it item ...

Triton: Works and definitely worth the money - though can be hard to find.

Triton: Works and definitely worth the money - though can be hard to find.

I had read about various enclosed-air systems while setting up my shop. I knew I wanted one because I haven’t yet got a proper dust collection system in place and didn’t want to wait to do anything until I had one. I liked the look of the Triton Tools Power Respirator and read some positive reviews so I decided to get one. That was easier said than done. Many reviews are a few years old and the companies mentioned in them no longer sell the unit. One place I saw online has ...
